How Package Theft Protection Plans Actually Work

Learn filing windows, payout limits, and proof needed for checkout, subscription, and card package plans.
Package theft protection plans are paid coverage that refunds or replaces an order stolen after delivery. You activate coverage before theft through a checkout fee, a subscription, or a card benefit, then you file a claim with order and delivery proof. The details decide the outcome.
Coverage applies to a specific order or spending pattern, and each plan sets its own filing window, payout cap, and evidence rules.

What checkout add-ons cover
A checkout plan such as Route covers only the order where you paid the fee. It insures that order against loss, theft, and damage in transit. According to Route Shopper Help, the buyer files directly for a refund or replacement through the Route filing guide for damaged orders.
Timing matters. According to Route merchant and Shopper Help documentation, delivered-but-missing packages wait about 5 days after the delivery scan before review, then must be filed within 15 to 30 days. Presumed-lost parcels need 7 days after the last tracking update, while damaged items need photos within 30 days, as described in the Route coverage and timing summary.
Payouts also have caps. According to the Route App, Inc. Policy Summary, coverage is backed by a Marine Open Cargo Policy effective Jan.
1, 2026 to Jan. 1, 2027, secured via Artex Risk Solutions through Seg Insurance Ltd. Liability is limited to $5,000 per package and $2,500 for packages containing laptops, tablets, phones, or watches.
What subscription plans cover
A subscription works across retailers instead of covering one checkout. PorchPals covers online purchases from any retailer once the buyer links a payment card. According to PorchPals, members can make up to three claims per membership year, with a $2,000 limit per stolen package and reimbursement after approval within about 72 hours, as explained on the PorchPals membership homepage.
That structure suits frequent online buyers. You do not choose coverage order by order. You maintain the membership, use the linked card, and track each delivery so you can report a missing package quickly.
What card benefits cover
Some credit cards include theft coverage without a separate checkout fee. Visa credit-card Porch Piracy Protection reimburses theft of eligible personal property bought with the covered account if stolen within 90 days of purchase. According to the Guardian Credit Union Visa benefits page, coverage is commonly up to $1,000 per claim and $10,000 per cardholder, as listed in the Guardian Credit Union card perks list.
Card coverage depends on how you paid. Only purchases made with the covered account qualify. You still need proof of purchase, delivery, and theft.
What happens without a plan
Postal compensation generally stops at delivery. U.S. Postal Service indemnity rules state compensation is not paid when loss, rifling, or damage occurred after delivery by USPS.
Theft from a porch after a completed delivery scan falls outside postal liability. Without an active checkout plan, subscription, or card benefit, a victim generally must seek a retailer goodwill refund, file a police or Postal Inspection Service report, and use tracking plus delivery photos as claim evidence. Useful steps include:
- Save the order receipt, tracking number, delivery scan, and delivery photo.
- Ask neighbors and check around doors, lockers, and building offices.
- Contact the retailer, then file police and Postal Inspection Service reports if needed.
