How Loyalty Apps Reset Rewards for the New Year

Track January 1 status resets, 12-month coffee expirations, and December 31 deadlines to avoid losing value.

Loyalty apps reset rewards in two ways for the new year. Annual progress counters restart on January 1, while redeemable points expire on each program's own schedule. Progress counters track qualifying activity toward status levels.

Redeemable balances are points or Stars that can be spent. That difference decides whether action by December 31 matters.

Do airline and hotel progress counters restart January 1?

Delta defines its Qualification Year as January 1 to December 31 and resets every member's MQD balance to zero, with no extension or rollover. Marriott states Elite Night Credits do not roll over and the count resets January 1, so travelers keep earned benefits but restart progress, according to Delta's Medallion qualification page and Marriott's Elite Night Credit help article. The practical effect is that qualifying flights and nights must post by December 31 to count for that year.

A stay or flight in early January starts the next year's chase. Points balances are separate and may remain available after the counter restarts.

Do restaurant and coffee points reset on January 1?

Dunkin' states points expire 12 months from the last day of the month earned, and an activated Standard Reward is valid for 30 days, according to Dunkin's Rewards Terms and Conditions. Points earned December 7, 2025 expire December 31, 2026 at 11:59 PM and cannot be reinstated. Starbucks terms differ by market.

Starbucks Kuwait terms effective May 2025 state Stars expire 12 months after the calendar month earned, while Starbucks Singapore says level Stars are refreshed and reset yearly and are not brought forward, as described in Starbucks Kuwait rewards terms and Starbucks Singapore Rewards FAQ.

Why does an activated reward disappear faster?

Activation starts a shorter clock. A Dunkin' Standard Reward lasts 30 days once activated, much less than the 12-month points clock before activation. The same pattern applies to leveled coffee programs.

Yearly level Stars may refresh even when some redeemable Stars use a monthly expiration rule. Check whether the app shows two dates: when points expire and when the reward coupon expires.

What should be done before December 31?

Separate redeemable balances from annual status counters. Hotel and airline progress restarts January 1 even when points remain, so redeem expiring points and complete qualifying stays or flights by December 31.

  • Check status progress and points expiration dates in each app
  • Book or complete qualifying travel so it posts by December 31
  • Spend points with a late-December expiration before they lapse
  • Wait to activate a reward coupon until it will be used within its short window

How do activity-based expirations differ?

American requires at least one earn or redeem with American or a partner every 24 months, which extends expiration 24 months from recent activity, according to American's AAdvantage FAQ. Members under age 21 are exempt until age 21. That model rewards any qualifying movement, not calendar-year earning.

A small partner earn or award redemption can preserve a balance. Calendar-year status progress still follows its own January-to-December schedule.
