How Companies Pick Winners for January Sweepstakes

Learn how January drawings work, what counts as eligible, and what to send back fast if you are picked.
Companies pick January sweepstakes winners in random drawings from all eligible entries received during the stated entry period. A sweepstakes is a prize promotion where chance decides and no purchase is needed to enter. The U.S.
Postal Inspection Service states that selection must be unbiased so paid and free entries have equal chance, usually by random drawing or preselected number, as explained in the consumer guide to sweepstakes and lotteries. A drawn name is only a potential winner until eligibility and paperwork checks are complete.

How does a random drawing work?
The sponsor pools every eligible entry received before the cutoff, then draws the stated number of names by chance. The method can be manual review by trained judges or a computer random-selection program. January sponsors set short, exact windows.
IKEA North America Services drew four potential winners at random from all eligible Instagram entries received Jan. 23-31, 2026, excluding early or late entries, according to the January 2026 IKEA style guide rules. Entries outside those dates did not count.
Odds depend on how many eligible entries arrive. That total is known only after entry closes, so January odds cannot be known in advance.
Who runs the drawing?
The sponsor may run the drawing itself or assign a third party acting for it. Foot Locker used that approach for its NBA All-Star 2026 drawing, with selection by the sponsor or a third party on or around Jan. 19, 2026, from entries received Dec.
14, 2025-Jan. 12, 2026, as described in the NBA All-Star 2026 rules. The sponsor also decides close calls about eligibility.
In several January rules, sponsor decisions were final and binding. That structure keeps paid and free entries in one pool. Federal guidance cited in the packet requires mailings to state that no purchase is necessary and a purchase does not improve odds.
What makes an entry count?
Only entries received during the listed entry period and through the listed method count. DraftKings set a Jan. 14-15, 2026 entry period and selected the potential winner on or about Jan.
15, 2026, from all eligible entries received. Read the entry window, entry method, and entry limit before you enter. A post marked early, late, duplicate over the limit, or sent to the wrong account can be removed before the drawing.
No purchase is necessary means you can enter without buying, but it does not mean the prize is free for everyone. It means you have a chance to win, not a promised item.
What happens after your name is drawn?
Notification and verification decide whether a potential winner becomes a winner. Denny's required a response within two days plus a signed affidavit, liability and publicity releases, and tax documents. IKEA notified potential winners by Instagram direct message.
NVIDIA posted winners online by Feb. 28, 2026. Act fast and use the contact you entered with: A missed deadline or unsigned form can void that draw and lead to another random pick.
