Hotel Points vs. Cash: Which Wins for New Year's Stays?

Compare cash and points for your exact New Year's dates to avoid overpaying for one peak night.
Points often win for a New Year's Eve hotel stay when the cash price spikes far above normal. Cash often wins when the nightly rate stays close to usual for that hotel. An award night is a night paid with hotel loyalty points instead of money.
That fixed-points option can blunt a one-night surge. The right pick depends on your dates, hotel, and points cost.

Why New Year's Eve cash rates jump
Hotel News Resource reported Manhattan December 31 rates averaged 167% above normal in a December 30, 2014 survey, with only 40% of hotels still holding rooms and the cheapest 3-star room at about $300, in the Hotel News Resource survey report. That pattern shows how one high-demand night can detach from normal pricing. When few rooms remain, hotels raise the cash price for what is left.
A points price tied to a chart or cap may not rise as fast. That gap is when points can beat cash.
Where capped points prices help
Hyatt's Free Nights chart caps standard-room awards by category and season, from 3,500 off-peak, 5,000 standard, and 6,500 peak for Category 1 to 35,000, 40,000, and 45,000 for Category 8, in the Hyatt Free Nights chart. The cap applies to standard rooms, not suites or special rates. A New Year's stay may price at the peak level for its category.
The limit still matters because the points cost cannot float freely above that peak. Category and room type decide whether the cap helps you.
Why five nights can stretch points
Marriott's Help article explains that Stay for 5, Pay for 4 removes the lowest-points night on five consecutive award nights at the same hotel in one reservation, in the Marriott Help article. The nights must be consecutive, at one hotel, and booked together as award nights. That structure favors a longer New Year's trip over a single-night stay.
A December 29 to January 3 points booking can include the peak night plus lower-points nights around it. The free night is the cheapest of the five, not the peak night.
How to decide for your dates
Start with your exact hotel and dates, not city averages. Cash and points move by property, room type, and night. If cash is near normal and points are high, pay cash and save points.
If cash has spiked while the points cost stayed near its usual range, points use less value. Check early because holiday rooms sell out and choices narrow.
- Note the refundable cash price for your room and dates.
- Note the total points required for the same room and dates.
- Compare the two side by side for each night and the whole stay.
- Check standard-room availability first, then look at longer-stay options.
