How does a hotel status match work?
You show the new program that you hold elite status elsewhere, then it grants a comparable tier for a trial period. Which matches are open to most travelers?

Why does November timing help?
Choice caps its Elite Status Match at Platinum, allows one per lifetime, and keeps matches approved July through December valid through the following calendar year, according to Choice status match terms.
