Holiday Travel Discounts for Military Families Explained

Save on holiday trips with military hotel rates, free PreCheck, waived bags and park passes.
Holiday travel discounts for military families cut hotel, flight, baggage, rail and park costs through military-rate programs and service-linked benefits. They cover booking sites, standby flights, airport screening, airline bags, trains, parks and theme parks. Eligibility varies by status, travel dates and itinerary.
Some savings extend to dependents, while others cover only the service member. Check ID rules and blackout dates before you book.

Where can you book military-rate holiday trips?
American Forces Travel is the joint-service MWR leisure-booking site. Military OneSource describes American Forces Travel discounts for hotels, flights, cars, cruises and packages. Access is limited to MWR-eligible patrons.
Bookings through the site also fund MWR programs. That structure links leisure savings to support for military community services. Use it to compare holiday hotel and package rates first.
Holiday demand raises prices and sells out dates. Start with flexible dates where possible. Keep your eligibility proof ready at booking and check-in.
Can you fly standby to save on holiday airfare?
Space-A travel lets eligible service members, retirees and families fly standby on Defense Department aircraft. The system assigns seats by priority category under DoDI 4515.13. Travel generally requires leave or pass status.
Signup runs through the Air Mobility Command self-signup tool. U.S. Army Benefits notes the tool went live March 26, 2026.
Holiday missions fill fast, so standby works better for flexible travelers. Standby does not replace a confirmed ticket for fixed plans. Have a backup fare in mind.
Confirm category, documents and baggage rules before heading to the terminal.
How can you move faster through the airport and pay less for bags?
U.S. Armed Forces members and Defense Department civilians receive free TSA PreCheck for work and personal travel. The Transportation Security Administration explains in its military travelers PreCheck guide that travelers enter the 10-digit DOD ID as the Known Traveler Number when booking.
Dependents do not receive automatic free PreCheck. Defense Travel Management Office guidance notes DOD retirees and veterans are excluded from the DOD-ID benefit. Spouses must enroll separately.
Military OneSource notes a $25 enrollment discount for spouses. Airline bag waivers add more savings on confirmed trips: Bring active military ID and check marketing-carrier rules. Measure oversized bags before departure.
Confirm weight limits for each flight segment.
- American Airlines waives bag fees with active U.S. military ID for up to 5 bags at 100 pounds each on orders.
- The same benefit allows up to 3 bags at 50 pounds each for personal travel.
- Coverage applies only on American-marketed and -operated itineraries.
- Delta offers active Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Space Force and Coast Guard members baggage exceptions on orders or leisure.
- Delta allows 5 free bags on orders up to 80 linear inches, and 2-3 free leisure bags up to 62 inches by cabin.
What rail and outdoor savings fit a holiday trip?
Amtrak states on its military discounts page that active-duty personnel plus spouses and dependents receive 10% off the lowest rail fare on most trains. The discount includes Auto Train with active-duty ID. Veterans receive 10% off with veteran ID.
Sleepers and some cross-border services are excluded. Holiday trains sell reserved seats early. Book the rail fare first, then add sleeper upgrades only if needed.
For outdoor stops, America the Beautiful passes cover entrance and standard day-use fees at National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife, Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Reclamation and Army Corps sites. The National Park Service provides a free Military Annual Pass for current members and dependents. Veterans and Gold Star Families can receive a free Lifetime Pass.
