Do holiday dates work the same everywhere?

No. Each retailer sets its own purchase period and return deadline. That means buyers need to read the policy for the exact store where they shop.

According to Target Help, Target grants an extended holiday window for electronics, entertainment, Apple/Beats products and most Target Plus items bought November 1–December 24, while other items use normal rules Target holiday return details. According to Best Buy Holiday FAQs, Best Buy extended returns for purchases made October 31–December 31, 2025 through January 15, 2026 Best Buy holiday return FAQs. Write down both dates for each gift: the last day to buy that qualifies, and the last day to return.

If you shop after the purchase period ends, normal rules may apply.

Which items often have different rules?

Category matters more than price. Entertainment, electronics, Apple and Beats products, and marketplace items often carry separate limits, even during the holidays. According to Target Help, most new, unopened items sold by Target fall under a normal 90-day window and most unopened Target Plus items fall under 30 days, but opened, damaged, or receipt-less returns may be denied Target holiday return details.

For the 2025 season, Best Buy excluded third-party-contract activatable devices, AppleCare+ plans, and holiday trees, lights and decorations from the extension. Check the product page for seller name and condition terms. If the item must stay sealed for return, keep it sealed until the recipient decides.

How do you check before you pay?

Read the return section on the product page and the store help page. Look for purchase dates, return deadline, excluded brands, opened-item rules, and receipt needs. Stores are not uniformly required to accept returns for non-defective items.

The Howard County Office of Consumer Protection notes a store may adopt any non-defective-item policy, including no returns or store-credit-only, if disclosed on signage, goods, or the sales agreement holiday shopping consumer guidance. If you do not see a sign or written term, ask before purchase. Do not assume a January 31 deadline applies to every brand.

  • Open the store help page for returns and holiday returns.
  • Enter or select the exact item to confirm the seller and category.
  • Ask staff how the deadline appears on the receipt.
  • Save or print the policy version you relied on.

What should you keep with the gift?

Keep the original receipt for your records and include a gift receipt with the present. The Federal Trade Commission advises shoppers to check refund and return policies before buying, keep receipts to support returns or card disputes, and ask for gift receipts to include with gifts FTC holiday shopping tips. Store receipts by purchase date in one folder, paper or digital.

Note the store, item, seller, final return date, and whether the item must remain unopened. Give the recipient the gift receipt, return deadline, and store location or website for returns. Keep batteries, cables, tags, and packaging together until the return period passes.
