Holiday Return Policy Changes: What Shifts After Christmas

Learn January return cutoffs for Amazon, Walmart, Target and Best Buy, plus mail fees that can shrink refunds.

After Christmas, normal return windows give way to fixed January deadlines that differ by store and item type. A holiday return extension is a temporary longer window for gifts bought in October through December. Amazon and Walmart hold most gifts until January 31.

Target and Best Buy narrow the extension, and fees can lower refunds on some returns.

What dates apply for Amazon and Walmart gifts?

Amazon covers items bought November 1 through December 31, 2026 until January 31, 2027. Apple-brand items have an earlier due date of January 15. The extension covers both fulfilled-by-Amazon and seller-fulfilled orders, according to PPC Land, reporting Amazon Seller News, in PPC Land report on Amazon's annual January deadline.

Walmart extends returns for most in-store and online purchases made October 1 through December 31 until January 31. That gives early gift buyers longer than the normal 90-day and electronics limits, according to Men's Journal, quoting Walmart policy, in Men's Journal report on Walmart's extended return start. Save the gift receipt and check whether the item was bought by marketplace seller or store stock.

The purchase date controls eligibility, not the date the gift was opened.

Why does Target treat electronics differently?

Target extends only electronics, entertainment, Apple and Beats products, and most Target Plus items bought November 1 through December 24, 2026. All other items keep normal 90-day or exception windows, as stated on Target's Help page in Target Help article on holiday returns. That split matters for mixed gifts.

A toy or clothing item follows its usual window. A headphone set or video game bought in the same trip follows the holiday electronics window. Sort gifts by category before making a trip.

Return the electronics group first when dates are close.

What changes for Best Buy purchases?

Best Buy's short 15-day standard window shifts to January 15 for purchases made October 31 through December 31. Activatable devices, AppleCare+ plans, and holiday decorations are excluded from the extension. The short window still affects phones and connected devices most.

Check activation status and plan terms before assuming the January 15 date applies. Keep phones unactivated when a return remains possible. Keep packaging and accessories together for electronics checks.

Will a return fee lower the refund?

About 72% of retailers charged for at least some returns in 2025, up from 66% in 2024, while retailers expected 15.8% of annual sales, about $849.9 billion, to be returned, according to TheStreet, reporting National Retail Federation and Happy Returns data alongside Best Buy policy, in TheStreet report on holiday return fees and deadlines. That trend means the refund can depend on method and condition. An opened electronics item can face stricter terms than an unopened gift in original packaging.

  • Check the receipt for the exact deadline by item.
  • Return electronics and Apple items first.
  • Bring all parts, remotes, chargers, and packaging.
  • Ask whether mail or in-store return avoids a deduction.
