Holiday Loyalty Tier Deadlines: When Do Points Years Reset?

See which status years end Dec. 31, why American uses March, and how to protect holiday tier credit.
Most airline and hotel loyalty tier years reset on January 1, making December 31 the cutoff for earning 2026 elite status. American Airlines is the major exception, with its qualification year — the period that counts toward elite status — running March 1 through the last day of February. That timing matters in November and December.
A flight or hotel night completed in the holiday season usually credits to the year you travel, not the year it posts. Posting delays can still push late-December activity past the cutoff.

Why most deadlines fall on December 31
Many programs use the calendar year to measure elite progress. Qualifying flights, nights, stays, and spending must be completed within that year to count. Delta Air Lines uses a January 1 to December 31 qualification year, and states that qualifying transactions must be completed by December 31, as explained in Delta's guide to qualifying for Medallion Status.
A December 30 takeoff that lands December 31 still falls in the old year. A December 31 flight that is delayed to January 1 may not. For hotel tiers, the same calendar-year pattern is common.
Hyatt's program measures Tier-Qualifying Nights or Base Points within each calendar year, with progress resetting January 1, as described in Hyatt's World of Hyatt program FAQs. Nights must be consumed and credited in the right year, not merely booked.
Why does American reset in March?
American Airlines AAdvantage does not follow the December deadline. Its status qualification year runs March 1 through the last day of February, and trackers reset to zero each March 1, according to American's AAdvantage FAQ. Holiday flights therefore count toward the March-ending year.
That shift changes holiday strategy for AAdvantage members. December travel adds to the same balance as January and February travel. Members chasing status have extra winter months after the holidays.
How long does earned status last?
Earning status in 2026 does not mean it expires in January. Earned status normally carries into a later year, then the counter starts again. American status earned in the March-to-February window remains valid through March 31 of the following full year, as stated in American's status overview.
Hyatt status earned in a calendar year lasts until the end of February two years after qualification. After those end dates, members keep the account and points but lose tier benefits unless they requalify.
What should holiday travelers check now?
Check the tracker in your airline or hotel account before booking holiday trips. Look for qualification year, nights or points needed, and whether the display shows completed or posted activity. If a December stay spans New Year's Eve, only the nights in December normally help 2026 qualification.
Split billing dates and late checkout do not move a January night back into December.
- Complete tier-earning travel by December 31 except for American AAdvantage.
- Allow several days for flights, nights, and credit-card spending to post.
- Keep boarding passes and hotel folios until the tier updates.
- For American, track the March 1 to last day of February window instead.
