Holiday Layaway Programs: Which Stores Still Offer Them?

Compare four holiday layaway plans, with down payments, fees, payment schedules and pickup deadlines.
Burlington, Rainbow Shops, Gabe's and participating Hallmark Gold Crown stores still offer layaway for the holidays. Layaway lets you reserve in-store merchandise with a down payment, pay over time, then pick it up after the final payment. Terms differ by store, including down payments, fees, time limits and excluded items.
Check the store policy before you start, because deadlines and item rules affect whether layaway fits your gift list.

What do Burlington and Rainbow Shops allow?
Burlington holds in-store layaway merchandise for 30 days with $10 or 20% down. According to Burlington, the plan has a $5 nonrefundable service fee, a $10 cancellation fee and a photo ID requirement in its Burlington layaway policy. Food, wall art, rugs, lamps and furniture are excluded.
Rainbow Shops offers layaway in more than 1,000 stores for in-store purchases only. According to Rainbow Shops, it requires 20% or $10 down with weekly payments for a maximum of 30 days in its Rainbow Shops layaway program. Clearance is excluded and prices are not adjusted after the contract starts.
How does Gabe's holiday deadline work?
Gabe's limits layaway to Unbelievable Rewards members age 18 and older with an email address and government ID. According to Gabe's, contracts require 20% down plus a $10 fee, then 20% payments every two weeks for 60 days, with a $50 minimum and $500 maximum in its Gabe's layaway policy. Only one layaway per customer is allowed, and food and clearance items are excluded.
Holiday timing is tight. Contracts started by Nov. 30 must be paid and picked up by Dec.
20. Start early enough to make each two-week payment before that pickup date.
What does Hallmark offer for seasonal gifts?
Participating Hallmark Gold Crown stores offer seasonal layaway from July to December and hold items up to 90 days with 20% down. According to Hallmark, payment plans vary because stores are independently owned in its Hallmark layaway answer. That variation makes a direct call important.
Ask the specific store what it holds, how often payment is due, and when pickup is required. Get the pickup date in writing with your receipt. A 90-day hold can cover early holiday shopping, but only the store can confirm its plan.
How can you use layaway without missing pickup?
Match the payment schedule to your paydays. A 30-day plan with weekly payments needs faster follow-through than a 60-day plan with biweekly payments. If the schedule looks tight, choose fewer items or a lower total.
- Confirm the item qualifies before signing, especially clearance, food and furniture exclusions.
- Write down the down payment, fee, payment dates and final pickup date.
- Ask what ID to bring for payments and pickup.
- Keep receipts until the merchandise is home.
