Gift Receipts for Black Friday Purchases: How They Work

Save the right slip at checkout so your Black Friday gift can be exchanged without showing the price.
A gift receipt is a price-hidden proof of purchase that lets a recipient return or exchange a Black Friday gift without seeing what you paid. You request it when you buy the gift, and the recipient uses it to seek an exchange or store credit under that store's return rules. Black Friday timing helps because many holiday extensions pause or stretch the normal clock.
Save the gift receipt, packing slip, or emailed gift notice until the recipient decides.

How do you give one?
Ask for a gift receipt at checkout when you buy a Black Friday gift. According to Target Help, shoppers must request it at checkout, and Target also allows a later request at Guest Services with the original receipt before it expires. Walmart advises gift givers to include a gift receipt to make exchanges easier.
According to Target's gift return help, its barcode links back to the original transaction without printing the price.
What does the recipient receive?
The recipient usually gets store credit, not cash back to your card. A Target gift returned in store with a gift receipt or Target.com packing slip generally produces a Target GiftCard for the return amount, subject to return eligibility. Amazon handles the balance differently.
According to Amazon's gift-return explainer, the recipient starts the return in the Returns Center with the 17-digit order number and does not need the giver's account. Best Buy gives store credit for the purchase price for an in-store gift return. A gift returned by mail is credited to the original purchaser with email notice.
- Find the 17-digit order number on the packing slip or emailed gift receipt
- Start the return in the Returns Center with that number
- Send the item back and wait for the balance after it arrives
Why does Black Friday timing matter?
Holiday extensions delay the return clock for late-year gifts. That matters for Black Friday because a normal 30- or 90-day window would otherwise run during the gift-giving season. According to Money's holiday-deadline reporting, Amazon accepts most Nov.
1-Dec. 31 purchases until Jan. 31.
Target starts the return window Dec. 26 for Nov. 1-Dec.
24 purchases.
What if there is no gift receipt?
Without any receipt, most retailers offer only store credit or exchange rather than a refund to the original payment method. The Better Business Bureau notes that stores are not legally required to accept non-defective returns. Check the packing slip before assuming the gift lacks proof.
Amazon can use the emailed digital gift receipt, Target.com orders can use the packing slip, and Best Buy treats mailed returns differently from in-store returns. Keep your original receipt through January so Guest Services can help if the gift slip is lost.
