Free Winter Coats for Kids: Where to Look This Season

Central Texas, Philadelphia-area and Cleveland families have specific school and nonprofit routes to request free kids' coats.
Free winter coats for kids are available this season through local schools and nonprofits tied to regional coat programs. Families in Central Texas and the Philadelphia area have specific distribution channels to check now. Operation Warm is a nonprofit that supplies brand-new winter coats to children in need through partner organizations.
That partner model shapes where families should look first.

Why start with your child's school?
According to Operation Warm, it provides coats only through schools, nonprofits and community organizations that file its Wish List application, so families must seek coats through a local partner rather than requesting direct shipment Operation Warm's Wish List page. Ask the school counselor, family liaison or front office whether the school has applied or received coats. If the school is not involved, contact a nearby nonprofit or community agency and ask whether it orders through Operation Warm.
Bring the child's size, school name and contact information when you ask.
- Ask whether the organization has filed a Wish List request
- Ask who distributes the coats and when
- Ask whether siblings or teens qualify at that site
What changed for Cleveland-area families?
According to Operation Warm, beginning July 1, 2025, Coats for Kids Cleveland combined with Operation Warm, and past Cleveland-area school or organization requesters must now request coats through the Wish List system Operation Warm's merger notice. Families should therefore ask local schools and agencies about Operation Warm orders, not a separate Cleveland request process. This matters if a school received coats in a prior year and assumes the old contact still works.
Staff may need to submit the current Wish List application before coats can arrive.
Where can Central Texas families look?
According to the Junior League of Austin, its Coats for Kids program collects and distributes more than 30,000 coats to eligible Central Texas children and teens, with school coat registration opening in October and community-organization bulk orders available after Dec. 10, 2026 2026 program page. A family with a child in a participating school should check with that school about registration.
A nonprofit serving eligible youth can pursue bulk orders once that later window opens. Since the school window opened in October and bulk orders start in December, timing affects which door to knock on first.
What about the Philadelphia area?
According to the Auto Dealers Association of Greater Philadelphia, its Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation hosts the 19th annual Driving Away the Cold program distributing more than 25,000 brand-new coats to children in need in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties through about 180 dealers 2026 program overview. Families in those five counties should ask a child's school, shelter or youth agency whether it receives coats through a participating dealer. Distribution runs through local organizations rather than walk-in dealership pickup for the public.
Contact the school or agency early in the season and confirm sizes, pickup dates and identification or enrollment details it requires.
