Free Visa Gift Cards: What Legitimate Promotions Require

Learn which disclosures, payment rules, card terms, and tax details distinguish a legitimate Visa gift card promotion.
A legitimate free Visa gift card promotion clearly identifies the sponsor, entry method, prize terms, and redemption process. If it is chance-based, it cannot require a purchase, payment, or fee to enter or improve your odds. "Free" describes the cost of entry, not necessarily every consequence of winning.
Before participating, check the rules, requested information, card restrictions, expiration date, and possible tax treatment.

No purchase means no payment for a chance
A sweepstakes awards prizes by chance. According to the Federal Trade Commission's prize guidance, a legitimate sweepstakes cannot require you to pay, buy something, or pay for better odds. "No purchase necessary" does not mean you will receive a card.
It means you may enter without buying anything, while only selected entrants win. Telephone promotions need especially clear disclosures. The promoter must explain that entry is free, identify the prize and its value, disclose the odds, and state how to redeem it.
What should the promotion disclose?
Read the complete rules before entering. They should let you understand what you might receive, how selection works, and what you must do if chosen. Look for: A Visa logo does not prove that an unfamiliar promoter has an authorized card program.
Visa's rules state that Visa-branded prepaid-card programs require Visa approval and compliance with anti-money-laundering requirements.
- The sponsor's identity and contact information
- A free entry method for a chance-based promotion
- The stated card value
- The entry and redemption instructions
- The odds or a clear explanation of how odds are determined
A prize should not require a release fee
A legitimate prize claim does not require payment for taxes, shipping, handling, processing, or customs. The FTC identifies these payment demands as prize warning signs. Stop if someone asks for your bank-account number, credit-card number, or Social Security number merely to release the card.
The FTC says a real promoter does not need those details for that purpose. A request for personal information may appear after an exciting winner notice. Judge the request by what is necessary to deliver the stated prize, not by the urgency or appearance of the message.
Check the card's expiration and restrictions
A promotional prepaid card is not always governed by the same terms as an ordinary retail gift card. Federal rules require it to identify its loyalty, award, or promotional purpose and display the underlying funds' expiration date on the front. Gift-card funds generally must remain valid for at least five years, but promotional cards can have different disclosed terms.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau advises checking the specific card terms instead of assuming every free Visa reward lasts five years. When the card arrives, verify the value, expiration date, activation instructions, and permitted uses. Save the promotion rules and delivery message until you have spent the balance.
"Free" prizes can still be taxable
Winning a Visa gift card may create taxable income even though entry cost nothing. IRS Publication 525 says prizes generally belong in taxable income, including a $50 gift-card prize. Keep the winner notice and a record of the card's stated value.
"Free" means you did not pay to enter; it does not make the prize exempt from tax.
