Free Trial Through Apple vs the Website: Where Do You Cancel?

Use your receipt, card statement, and subscription settings to find the right place to cancel before a free trial renews.

If your free trial was billed through Apple's App Store, cancel it through Apple's subscription controls. If you enrolled on the service's website, cancel through that company's billing system or contact the company that billed you. An App Store in-app subscription is a plan purchased inside an Apple app and charged through your Apple Account.

Apple confirms that these subscriptions may not be manageable on the service's website in its subscription cancellation guidance.

How to identify who bills the trial

Start with the receipt. An Apple receipt identifies the Apple Account used for the purchase, which may differ from the account currently signed in on your device. If you cannot find a receipt, check the billing name on your bank or credit-card statement.

Apple advises consumers to use these records to identify the company responsible for the charge. A trial missing from Apple's Subscriptions screen may have been purchased elsewhere. If there is no Apple receipt, contact the company named on the statement rather than repeatedly searching your Apple settings.

Canceling an Apple-billed trial

On an iPhone or iPad, follow these steps: Apple says an expiration message, or the absence of a Cancel button, means the subscription is already canceled. Its guidance also says to cancel a free or discounted trial at least 24 hours before it ends if you do not want renewal.

  • Open Settings.
  • Tap your name.
  • Tap Subscriptions.
  • Select the service.
  • Tap Cancel Subscription.

Canceling a website-billed trial

Sign in to the same service account used when starting the trial. Look for billing, plan, membership, or subscription settings and follow the company's cancellation process. ChatGPT provides a documented example of the difference.

OpenAI says a plan purchased on chatgpt.com is canceled under ChatGPT Settings and Billing, while an App Store purchase must be canceled through Apple's subscriptions screen. That example does not establish the exact menu names for every service. It shows why the billing channel—not simply the app you use—determines where you should begin.

Account deletion may not stop billing

Do not assume that deleting an app or service account cancels an App Store subscription. Those actions may be separate from Apple's billing controls. For App Store-billed ChatGPT, OpenAI specifically warns that deleting the ChatGPT account does not cancel the Apple subscription.

Subscribers must cancel through Apple first, according to OpenAI's cancellation instructions. Check Apple's Subscriptions screen after making account changes. An expiration notice or missing Cancel button is the documented sign that Apple already considers the subscription canceled.

Cancellation and refunds are separate

Cancellation normally prevents future renewals; it does not automatically reverse an earlier charge. If you want a refund, the billing channel matters again. OpenAI directs App Store purchasers to Apple for ChatGPT refund requests and website purchasers to OpenAI Support.

For another service, identify the biller from the receipt or statement, then use that biller's documented refund process.
