Free Toy Exchange Events: How Swap Programs Work

Learn which swaps need tokens, registration, or early drop-off so you can bring the right toys and take home what fits.
Free toy exchange events let families bring usable toys and take home different toys at no cost. Each swap program sets its own trade rules, condition limits, and pickup steps. Programs range from open community tables to timed token swaps.
Knowing the format helps you bring the right items and avoid a wasted trip.

Can you take toys without bringing any?
Yes, at some swaps. Pass-It-On Swap says families may take needed items with no donation required to participate, according to current exchange details. That model covers toys, clothes, books, and bedding for babies through teens.
Dublin City Council says families may bring up to five toys in excellent condition to its Toy Library Swap and Play in Terenure on Nov. 7, while people who bring nothing may still take toys home free, according to the event listing. Other swaps expect a closer trade.
- Check whether take-without-donate is allowed before you go.
- Bring clean, complete items when you can.
- Ask staff where free-choice tables are located.
How does token swapping work?
Goring Repair Café uses one-in, one-out token swapping for its Toy and Games Exchange, according to the Exchange FAQs. Donors receive one token per accepted item after signing registration and house rules. Shoppers then use tokens to choose different items.
The token count keeps the exchange balanced and prevents one household from clearing a table.
What toys qualify?
Goring Repair Café limits households to five toys or games plus one small child's bike. It accepts only good-condition, safe items for ages birth to 11. It rejects badly damaged items, unsafe brakes, and battery- or mains-powered toys.
Deborah Rawson Memorial Library also requires clean, complete toys for its Dec. 12, 2026 swap, bars clothes and costumes, allows only like-new stuffed animals, and refuses donations after Dec. 9 for sorting.
Do you need to register or donate early?
Sometimes. The Wee Swap requires advance registration and item drop-off to secure an Event Day swap place. It bars walk-ins during the main swap.
The same program then holds an open free Tot's Hour with no registration or take limits for leftover baby goods. Deborah Rawson Memorial Library uses an advance-donation window of Dec. 1-9, which gives organizers time to check and sort inventory.
Where do leftover toys go?
Leftover inventory is often redistributed rather than discarded. Pass-It-On Swap donates excess to local charities, which extends reuse for families and nonprofits. That charity step also reduces landfill waste.
Sort toys the night before, remove broken parts, and place small pieces in sealed bags.
