Free Streaming Trials: Which Offers Require a Payment Method?

Compare card requirements, temporary holds, automatic billing, and cancellation timing before starting a streaming trial.
YouTube TV, Fubo, Philo, Crunchyroll, Paramount+, and any qualifying HBO Max trial or promotion require a payment method at signup. Disney+ does not currently offer a free trial in the U.S., so there is no Disney+ trial to start with payment details. A free streaming trial provides temporary access without the regular subscription charge.
However, these offers commonly collect billing information in advance and begin paid service unless the subscriber cancels on time.

What each signup requires
YouTube TV requires a credit card, verifies it with a small temporary authorization, and does not accept prepaid cards for its trial. The trial length can vary for eligible new subscribers. Fubo also requires a valid payment method, although not every Fubo plan includes a trial.
Philo's seven-day new-subscriber trial requires users to choose a payment method during signup. Crunchyroll's standard seven-day Premium trial requires an accepted payment method. Paramount+ also collects valid payment details when a direct subscription includes a trial.
HBO Max requires payment information for any plan or promotion that happens to include trial access.
A payment method does not mean every plan has a trial
A signup page can request payment information even when the selected plan lacks a free trial. Fubo specifically notes that trials are not included with every plan, while HBO Max says most subscription providers do not offer new-subscriber trials. Paramount+ trial availability and duration appear during signup, and its trials are generally restricted to new subscribers.
Readers should confirm that the checkout page displays a trial and its end date before submitting payment details. Philo identifies its seven-day offer as a new-subscriber trial. Prior use of a service may therefore affect eligibility, even if the signup page still allows someone to enter billing information.
Why a temporary charge may appear
A free trial can produce a pending charge without starting regular subscription billing. The service or card issuer may use a temporary authorization to confirm that the payment method works. YouTube TV describes a small temporary authorization.
Fubo warns that some card issuers may display a refundable $1 validation charge, while Crunchyroll may show a temporary verification charge. These holds differ from the recurring fee that follows a trial. A reader who sees one should check whether the transaction is pending or completed and compare its description with the service's signup terms.
What happens when the trial expires
These documented trials generally convert to paid memberships unless canceled before their deadlines. That makes the displayed expiration date more important than an assumed seven-day window, especially when the service says trial length can vary. YouTube TV begins paid service when its varying-length trial ends.
Crunchyroll's Premium trial also becomes paid automatically, while Paramount+ starts billing unless the subscriber cancels before expiration. HBO Max promotions with trials normally auto-renew as well. Before enrolling, record the trial's exact end date and the plan selected.
A calendar reminder set before that date leaves time to cancel without relying on a last-minute notification.
Cancellation timing can change the value
Canceling early does not have the same effect everywhere. YouTube TV says subscribers who cancel during a trial keep access through its scheduled end, but Crunchyroll says canceling ends Premium trial access immediately. That difference affects when a cautious subscriber may want to cancel.
An early YouTube TV cancellation can prevent conversion while preserving remaining trial access; an early Crunchyroll cancellation sacrifices the unused Premium period. Before starting any trial:
- Confirm that the chosen plan actually includes the offer.
- Note the displayed trial length and renewal date.
- Check whether the proposed card or wallet is accepted.
- Review whether cancellation ends access immediately.
- Save the cancellation confirmation and check the payment account afterward.
