Free Shipping Memberships: Are They Worth It for Holidays?

Compare membership prices, shipping minimums, and holiday cutoffs before you pay for faster delivery.

Free shipping memberships are worth it for the holidays if you will place many gift, grocery, and last-minute orders. They are usually not worth it if you will place only one or two orders. A free shipping membership is a paid plan that removes or reduces delivery fees and often adds faster delivery windows.

Holiday costs add up through per-order shipping fees, minimum-order requirements, and rush timing. Comparing your likely order count against the yearly or monthly price shows whether a plan saves money.

What the main holiday memberships cost

Amazon Prime costs $14.99 per month or $139 per year in the U.S. and includes fast, free Same-Day, One-Day, and Two-Day delivery on millions of eligible items, according to Amazon's Prime benefits page. That structure favors shoppers who buy gifts across many sellers and need quick delivery.

Walmart+ costs $98 per year or $12.95 per month and includes free shipping with no order minimum, according to Walmart Corporate's membership announcement. The same plan also includes free same-day store delivery, fuel discounts, streaming access, and early access. Target Circle 360 costs $99 per year or $10.99 per month, with lower annual and monthly rates for verified students, teachers, military members, assistance recipients, and Circle Card holders, according to Target's Circle 360 page.

Annual billing costs far less than paying month to month through the season.

When a membership can pay off

A membership makes sense when your shipping fees would exceed the plan price. A shopper facing several $5.99 charges can cross the yearly cost quickly. Monthly billing can work for a short holiday burst, although two or three months of monthly payments narrows the savings.

Speed also matters for late gifts. Amazon reported delivering more than 13 billion items the same or next day globally in 2025, which shortens gift lead times. Target Circle 360 offers fast shipping as soon as tomorrow, unlimited same-day delivery on orders over $35, monthly freebies, early sale access, and an extra 30 days for returns.

Bundled extras can add value when you already use them. Streaming, fuel discounts, grocery delivery, and early sale access help only if they replace spending you would make anyway. Do not count an extra you will not use.

When you can skip the membership

Infrequent buyers can often avoid a new fee by consolidating carts. Target shoppers without a membership still receive free shipping on orders of $35 or more or when paying with a Target Circle Card, and otherwise pay $5.99, according to Target Help's shipping-options article. One larger order therefore beats three small orders with three fees.

Walmart+ has no order minimum for free shipping, so the decision turns more on delivery speed and store-delivery use. If you shop mainly in person and order online once, the membership price likely exceeds the saving. A single month may still help for a heavy gift week.

Check what you already have before buying another plan. A household sharing one membership, a student or military discount, or a store card benefit may already cover shipping. Overlapping plans rarely pay.

Holiday limits that affect delivery

Free and fast shipping applies only to eligible items and conditions. Marketplace or vendor exclusions, size and weight limits, address limits, and store availability can remove an item from fast shipping. Target same-day delivery also requires an eligible address and an order over $35.

Mail timing creates another hard limit for mailed gifts. For Christmas 2025 delivery in the contiguous U.S., the U.S. Postal Service recommended sending by Dec.

17 for Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, Dec. 18 for Priority Mail, and Dec. 20 for Priority Mail Express.

Actual delivery varies by origin and acceptance time.
