Free Samples With Free Shipping: How to Avoid Handling Fees

Learn how to spot truly no-cost samples, preserve free standard shipping, and avoid hidden or recurring charges.
A truly free sample should not require a shipping or handling payment. The Federal Trade Commission says an offer is not free when you must pay those charges to receive it under the offer's terms (FTC consumer guidance). To avoid fees, confirm that checkout shows $0 for both shipping and handling.
Another option is adding a complimentary sample to a purchase you already intended to make when that order qualifies for free standard shipping.

What "free with free shipping" should mean
Separate the sample's price from the total cost of claiming it. A product priced at $0 may still produce shipping, handling, processing, or recurring charges. A genuine no-cost checkout should show: "No purchase necessary" and "free" are also different.
The first describes whether a purchase is required; the second concerns whether you must pay anything to receive the item.
- A $0 product price
- $0 shipping and handling
- No required paid upgrade
- No future shipment or subscription charge
- A clear total before you submit the order
A documented Sephora option
As of September 9, 2026, Sephora advertises a free sample with any purchase at checkout, while supplies last (current Sephora offers). The sample is complimentary, but the required purchase means the entire transaction is not free. Beauty Insider members receive free standard 1–3-day U.S.
shipping without a purchase minimum. By comparison, a guest order below $50 carries a $6.95 standard-shipping charge (Sephora shipping information). This route makes sense when you already planned to place an order and qualify for member shipping.
Buying an unnecessary product merely to obtain a small sample does not create savings.
Check the delivery method before paying
Free shipping may apply only to the slowest listed option. At Sephora, the member benefit covers standard delivery, while guaranteed two-day and one-day shipping cost $12.95 and $16.95. Before submitting an order: A banner promising free shipping does not settle the question.
The final order total reveals whether your address, account, cart, and selected delivery method qualify.
- Keep standard shipping selected
- Check that no handling charge appears
- Confirm the sample remains in the cart
- Review the final total after entering your address
- Leave the checkout if an unexplained fee appears
Watch for trials and recurring shipments
Some "sample" offers are actually trials that later convert into paid shipments. Read the billing schedule, cancellation deadline, and any pre-checked boxes before entering payment details. The risk is more than theoretical.
In a 2019 case, the FTC alleged that marketers promoted trials for about $4.95 in shipping and handling, then charged some consumers as much as $98.71 and enrolled them in negative-option plans (FTC enforcement announcement). A negative-option plan treats silence or inaction as permission to continue billing. Do not rely on the word "sample." Stop if the checkout does not clearly disclose the full charge, future billing, cancellation method, or timing of recurring shipments.
