Free Planetarium Shows for the Holidays by City

City-by-city dates, ticket rules, and age notes for free holiday dome shows to plan a low-cost outing.
Free holiday planetarium programs were listed in six cities for December 2025, spanning Illinois, Nebraska, Arizona, Virginia, and Ohio. A planetarium is a dome theater that projects stars, planets, and seasonal sky stories overhead. The listings include no-ticket Saturday shows, reservation-only holiday runs, and anniversary open-house shows.
Worcester is the exception: its museum opened free on Dec. 24, while its planetarium program that day was listed as a member benefit. Capacity controls applied elsewhere, so checking the venue notice before going matters.

Which Midwest cities listed free holiday shows?
Augustana College says its John Deere Planetarium in Rock Island presented "Season of Light" Dec. 6-12, 2025, with reservations required, as described in the holiday planetarium announcement. The show was not recommended for children 7 and under.
Reservations were handled through Eventbrite. Wayne State College says its Fred G. Dale Planetarium in Wayne offered free public planetarium and laser shows Dec.
19-21, 2025, as described in the December planetarium schedule. Free-will donations were accepted. The dates closed the Fall 2025 public season.
Youngstown State University's Ward Beecher Planetarium was reported as presenting free family holiday programs, including "Let It Snow!" Dec. 12-13 and Dec. 19-20.
Admission was listed as free. Check the venue listing for showtimes and age guidance.
What about Tucson and Virginia?
The Flandrau Science Center says its Tucson planetarium offered free planetarium shows plus free exhibit admission Dec. 13, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
for its 50th anniversary, as described in the anniversary celebration notice. Same-day tickets were first-come, first-served. Arriving early mattered.
James Madison University says its John C. Wells Planetarium in Harrisonburg offers free Saturday public shows with no tickets needed, as described in the Saturday show schedule. Its seasonal feature is "Mystery of the Christmas Star." Radford University lists free public shows in Center for the Sciences Room M75, with Fall 2026 shows Thursdays at 7 p.m.
and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. through Dec. 5.
Do you need reservations?
Ticket rules varied by city, so use the venue's stated method. Harrisonburg needed no tickets for Saturday public shows. Tucson used same-day, first-come tickets for the anniversary day.
For reserved venues, complete these steps: Augustana required reservations. Radford's room seats 55, which limits each show.
- Reserve through the listed channel when required, such as Eventbrite in Rock Island.
- Arrive early for first-come seating, especially for anniversary or closing-weekend shows.
- Bring donation cash only where donations are mentioned, such as Wayne.
What age and seating limits apply?
Age guidance was explicit only in Rock Island, where "Season of Light" was not recommended for children 7 and under. Other listings described family shows without an age cutoff. Parents should still expect dark rooms, loud sound, and seated viewing.
Seating was capacity-controlled in several cities. Tucson relied on same-day tickets, Rock Island required reservations, and Radford's small room fills quickly. Worcester's Dec.
24 free museum day did not make planetarium seating free, because that program was listed as a member benefit.
