Learn which holiday-photo offers waive only the appointment fee and which actually include downloadable image files.
A free holiday photo sitting usually means the appointment fee is waived, not that you receive free digital images. A free digital download must be stated separately and should list how many files you receive. Think of a sitting as access to the camera session.
The photos, prints, downloads, editing, and usage rights can each be separate parts of the offer.

What "Free Sitting" Usually Covers
A free sitting commonly removes the cost of being photographed. It may include a set amount of studio time, a seasonal backdrop, and a proof gallery or viewing appointment. That does not automatically include a file you can save, print at home, or share online.
Haus of Portraits, for example, says its complimentary promotion waives a session fee but excludes digital files, downloads, prints, albums, and collections, which are sold separately. What Counts as a Free Digital Download?
A digital download is an image file delivered for you to download, usually after editing. The offer should say whether it is high resolution, how many images are included, and whether you choose the files. Look for specific wording such as "five digital images included," rather than assuming a gallery means you receive the files.
The Boho House's 2026 holiday mini describes five chosen downloads from about 20 edited images; its larger tier lists more than 40 edited images. The Boho House 2026 mini details A download allowance can also be limited while extra images cost more. Before booking, separate the appointment from the product. A waived session fee can be valuable, but it is not the same as a no-cost holiday photo package. Check these points beside the word "free": The FTC's guidance says conditions for receiving and keeping a free item should be clear and conspicuous at the outset.
FTC guidance on "free" representations
- Is only the session fee waived, or is a print or download included?
- Is a purchase required to receive the promised item?
- How many downloads are included, and are they high resolution?
- What does each additional image cost?
- When will the gallery or download arrive?
Do Not Expect Every Photo From the Session
A gallery is not necessarily every frame taken. Photographers may remove tests, duplicates, unfinished shots, and images needing more work before showing clients a curated selection. The Dog Studio NM says it does not provide RAW files, tests, duplicates, unfinished images, or unretouched images.
That matters if "all photos" is important to you: ask what the gallery includes before you book. The Dog Studio NM FAQ Choose your included images carefully if the offer gives you a limited number of downloads. Ask whether your selection deadline, retouching, and delivery method are included in the stated price.
A Download Is Not Automatically Ownership
Receiving a digital file does not automatically transfer copyright. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that the photographer generally starts as the author and copyright owner unless a work-for-hire exception or written transfer applies.
U.S. Copyright Office guidance for photographers That does not prevent normal personal uses if the photographer's license permits them. Still, check whether you may print the file yourself, post it online, share it with relatives, or use it for cards before placing an order.
