Free College Course vs Free College Credit: What Costs Should You Check?

Learn which fees turn a free online course into real college credit, from CLEP exam and test center charges to certificate upgrades.

A free college course and free college credit are different things. You can often take a course at no cost, but getting credit usually means paying for an exam, a test center fee or a certificate, and then getting a college to accept the result. Take a free online course that prepares you for a CLEP exam as an example.

CLEP stands for College-Level Examination Program. The course costs nothing, but credit depends on passing the exam and on your college's rules. Before you start, check four things: the exam fee, the test center fee, the certificate fee and your school's credit policy.

Why Isn't a Free Course the Same as Free Credit?

A course teaches you the material. Credit is what a college puts on your transcript toward a degree. Only the college that grants your degree decides whether something you did elsewhere counts.

This is true even for courses reviewed by outside groups. The American Council on Education (ACE) reviews courses and recommends some of them for credit. It does not award credit itself.

As StraighterLine's explanation of ACE credit notes, the receiving college decides whether to accept it, how many credits count and where they fit in your degree. So "free" and "for credit" are two separate claims. Check each one on its own.

What Does the CLEP Route Actually Cost?

College Board's CLEP page lists each CLEP exam at $97 for 2025–26. Test centers add their own administration fee on top of that. An industry guide puts those fees at about $15 to $40 per exam, varying by center.

That guide is not a primary source, so ask your test center for its actual fee. Modern States offers free courses that match CLEP exams. According to the Modern States FAQ, if you pass one of its courses you get a voucher that covers the $97 exam fee for the matching exam.

The voucher does not cover the test center's separate fee. Modern States will also pay back eligible test center fees, with conditions. You must finish the course, get its voucher code and use that code to register for the matching CLEP exam.

If you register without the code, you lose that reimbursement.

  • Exam fee: $97, or covered by a Modern States voucher
  • Test center fee: set by the center, and possibly reimbursed if you used the voucher
  • Retakes, travel and study materials: check them before you schedule

Will Your College Accept the Credit?

Passing an exam does not guarantee credit at your school. College Board says more than 2,900 U.S. colleges grant credit for CLEP exams.

Each college sets its own rules on which exams count, what score you need and how much credit you get. Before you pay anything, look up your school in College Board's CLEP college credit policy search. Then confirm with your registrar or academic advisor.

Ask whether the credit counts toward your major or only as an elective, since that changes how much it is worth to you. If you plan to transfer, check the policy at the school you will graduate from, not just the one you attend now.

What About Free Courses on Coursera and edX?

Many big course platforms let you learn for free but charge for proof that you finished. On Coursera, auditing lets you watch videos and read materials without paying, but you get no certificate. You can upgrade to the paid version at any time to earn one.

edX works in a similar way. Verified certificates typically cost about $50 to $300 per course, and multi-course programs can go past $1,500. That figure comes from a secondary pricing guide, so check the price on the course page itself.

A certificate is not college credit. Unless a specific college has agreed to accept that course, a paid certificate shows you finished the course and nothing more.

Who Can Skip the Exam Fee Entirely?

High school students may pay less. College Board reports that some states and schools fund CLEP exams for high school students, which can remove the $97 fee for those who qualify. Eligibility depends on your state and school.

A high school counselor can tell you whether funding exists locally. Also ask whether it covers the test center fee, because the funding described covers the exam fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a Modern States voucher for any CLEP exam?

No. The voucher covers the exam that matches the Modern States course you finished.

Does auditing a Coursera course cost anything later?

Auditing is free. You only pay if you choose to upgrade for a certificate.

Should I pay for the exam before checking my school's policy?

No. Look up your college in College Board's policy search and confirm with your registrar first, because each school sets its own credit rules.
