Family Giveaways in Washington, DC: Updated 2026 List for Local Winners

A date-stamped guide to 2026 DC backpack events, supply limits, one raffle, and the separate SUN Bucks benefit.
Washington, DC has no single official "Family Giveaways" program or complete 2026 list of local winners. Instead, the DC Government event directory lists dated backpack, school-supply, and raffle opportunities, with more events still being added. Here, "family giveaways" means free items or prize drawings promoted at family-friendly events.
Some listings have limited supplies, and most do not describe formal winner-selection rules.
Upcoming backpack and school-supply events
Four August events advertise backpacks, school supplies, or other giveaways: Capitol View's listing does not state supply limits or eligibility. Benning's event advertises school supplies and giveaways but provides no advance-entry or winner-selection rules.

Where supplies are explicitly limited
Woodridge Library promises free backpacks and school supplies "while they last." Its festival also includes a uniform swap, and the listing states no residency requirement. Northwest One Library describes its backpack giveaway as limited. That wording means attending the event does not ensure that every family will receive a backpack.
Families seeking supplies should distinguish a confirmed event from a confirmed item. Check the District directory again before traveling, and do not treat an event listing as a reservation.
The Capitol Hill raffle
Hill Family Biking's Capitol Hill ride is scheduled for Aug. 29, 2026. It ends with a block party and raffle at School Within School, 920 F St.
NE. The listing confirms the raffle but does not identify prizes, entry requirements, or eligibility. Families therefore cannot determine from the published information whether entry requires joining the ride or completing another step.
SUN Bucks is a benefit, not a giveaway
DC SUN Bucks provides a one-time $120 grocery benefit to eligible students. Automatic eligibility generally covers students receiving SNAP or TANF, approved for free or reduced-price meals, in foster care, or experiencing homelessness. Families not automatically enrolled need a student at a participating 2025–26 school and household income that qualifies for free or reduced-price meals.
The District's SUN Bucks information page sets the 2026 application deadline at Aug. 23 and says benefits expire after 122 days. Eligible families who still need to apply can use the 2026 DC SUN Bucks enrollment page.
Do not confuse a lottery with a free prize
The 2026 DPR summer-camp process was a placement lottery, not a giveaway. Registration closed Feb. 16, selection did not guarantee a camp slot, and families receiving offers still had to pay.
This distinction matters because "lottery" can describe a random allocation process without offering a free prize. DPR's summer-camp FAQ provides the applicable registration details.
