Compare earned reading prizes, costume awards, a first-responder trip drawing, and free museum craft days in Virginia Beach.

Virginia Beach families have four verified 2026 opportunities still relevant as of August 19: local reading prizes, costume awards, a national trip drawing, and free museum activities. This is not a list of four Virginia Beach-only winner drawings; eligibility and reward methods differ by program. Some benefits are earned through participation, while others depend on a contest or random selection.

Check the age, deadline, and supply limits before choosing an opportunity.

Earned prizes through Summer Reading

Virginia Beach Public Library's Summer Reading Challenge runs from June through August. Children age 11 and under can complete reading and activities to earn badges and prizes. Teens ages 12–18 can earn a tote bag and a restaurant or entertainment gift card.

Logged books also provide entries toward a $200 Best Buy gift-card drawing, according to the City of Virginia Beach Summer Reading Challenge page. The tote and gift card are participation rewards; the $200 card is a chance-based prize.

Local costume contests and giveaways

Town Center's free Town and Treat is scheduled for October 24 at Fountain Plaza. The event includes family activities, more than 30 candy stops, free prizes, giveaways, and costume contests. Children age 12 and under can enter one of three child costume categories.

A separate Best Family Costume category offers families another way to compete for trophies and prizes, as detailed in the Central Business District Association event listing. The organizer notes that event details may change, so recheck the listing before attending.

A national drawing for first-responder families

Home Clean Heroes is accepting entries through August 31 for a New York trip for up to four people. No purchase is required, but the drawing is limited to active U.S. first responders rather than the general public.

One winner is expected to be selected randomly around September 10. The selected entrant must prove active first-responder employment or volunteer duty within five days, according to the Home Clean Heroes official rules. Virginia Beach residents may qualify, but the rules do not reserve the prize for a local winner.

Free museum activities without a drawing

Virginia Beach History Museums plans free First Saturday Community Days from September through December at Francis Land House. These family-oriented events include children's crafts and activities while supplies last. Advance registration is encouraged, although walk-ins are welcome, according to Virginia Beach Cultural Affairs.

This is a free activity opportunity, not a sweepstakes, and registration should not be treated as a reservation of limited craft materials.
