Find active Detroit family giveaways, upcoming school-supply events, and listings that are closed or expired.

As of August 10, 2026, Detroit families can still pursue one active home-cooling giveaway and two upcoming back-to-school distributions. This list separates those opportunities from a closed backpack program, a ticketed sports promotion, and events that have already passed. Here, a family giveaway means free goods or resources distributed by a public agency, nonprofit, or event host.

Eligibility, advance registration, and limited supplies may determine who receives an item.

Which household assistance is open now?

The City of Detroit is accepting applications for its Delray window air-conditioner program through August 31, 2026. It serves eligible residents in designated areas near the bridge. Approved households receive a window AC unit with MERV-13-or-better filtration and necessary wiring.

Families should review the address requirements and apply through the City of Detroit program page. This is an eligibility-based program, not a random drawing.

Upcoming back-to-school giveaways

MOCAD will hold a free Back-to-School Community Resource Fair on August 23 from 1–3 p.m. at 4454 Woodward Avenue. Detroit students and families can receive backpacks and school supplies while quantities last.

The fair also includes books and a clothing swap. Families can review details and free registration through MOCAD's event listing, but registration should not be treated as a promise that supplies will remain. The Semaj J.

Morgan Foundation lists its Third Back-to-School Backpack Giveaway for August 15. Planned offerings include backpacks, school supplies, snacks, and music. However, the foundation's current event listing still marks the time and location as TBD.

Families should wait for those details before arranging transportation or treating the event as confirmed for a particular venue.

Which programs are restricted or ticketed?

Volunteers of America Michigan lists an Operation Backpack distribution at the Detroit Zoo on August 11. However, backpack requests are closed, the program is at capacity, and participation requires preregistration. Someone without an existing registration should not expect to receive a backpack as a walk-up visitor.

The restrictions appear on the Operation Backpack page. Detroit Tigers promotional items also require game attendance. Fans need tickets, should arrive early, and receive items only while supplies last.

Later-season giveaways have not yet been announced, so these promotions differ from free community distributions.

Events that should no longer appear as current

Campus Kids Day at Campus Martius offered backpacks, books, and ticket giveaways on August 9, but that event occurred yesterday. The broader series continues through October 4, although giveaway details for later dates have not been confirmed. Two City of Detroit events are also expired.

The District 4 Wellness Expo offered raffles and giveaways on July 25, while the Emergency Preparedness Fair offered giveaways and pet-food distribution on June 13. Past events can show what local organizers sometimes provide, but they are not usable opportunities for families today. Confirm the event date before making travel plans or sharing a listing.

A quick check before attending

Review each opportunity for four details: For the August 15 Semaj J. Morgan Foundation giveaway, do not leave home until the foundation publishes both a time and location.

  • Date and time: Make sure they are confirmed and have not passed.
  • Access: Check whether the event is free, ticketed, or preregistration-only.
  • Eligibility: Look for address, residency, or program-area restrictions.
  • Availability: "While supplies last" means an item may run out before the event ends.
