Does GasBuddy Really Save You Money on Road Trips?

Check nearby prices, activate Deal Alerts before pumping, and time fills to stretch each tank further on long drives.

Yes, GasBuddy can save you money on road trips, but the savings are modest per gallon. GasBuddy, a free app that shows crowdsourced fuel prices at nearby stations, helps you pick cheaper stops along your route. The extra savings come from small per-gallon discounts and better timing.

Limits on discounted gallons and normal price differences by route keep the total in check.

How do you find cheaper stops?

GasBuddy's Help Center says the free app displays nearby station prices you can sort by price, distance, brand and fuel grade across the U.S. and Canada What is Pay with GasBuddy. That sort makes it easier to spot a lower-priced station near your exit.

GasBuddy's trip tool estimates gallons, total fuel cost and station-by-station savings from your route and vehicle GasBuddy Trip Cost Calculator. Enter the route before you leave.

  • Check prices along the route, not only near home.
  • Compare a small detour against the per-gallon spread.
  • Recheck prices on travel days, since station prices move.

What does the pump card add?

The free Pay with GasBuddy+ card links to a checking account and works anywhere Mastercard is accepted, with no credit check. Everyday savings are 3 cents per gallon, plus 2 cents more at select stations. Activating a Deal Alert or Flash Deal before fueling raises savings to up to 30 cents per gallon on the free card, GasBuddy's pay page explains GasBuddy Pay discounts.

The same page says paid Premium can reach up to 50 cents per gallon on those deals. Activate the alert before you pump, not after. If no Deal Alert appears, you still keep the smaller everyday discount.

Why do savings shrink on long trips?

Premium and Plus savings are capped at 20 cents per gallon on the first 50 gallons each monthly billing period, then drop to 5 cents per gallon, GasBuddy's Help Center explains Membership Savings Limits. A two-car family or a multi-fill loop can hit that ceiling fast. That cap matters most on long drives with several fill-ups.

Once past 50 gallons, station choice matters more than the card rate. Plan the discounted gallons for the largest fills. Use price comparison for every other stop.

What else controls your fuel bill?

Pump prices change by route because crude costs, refining, distribution and taxes differ. The U.S. Energy Information Administration lists 18.40 cents per gallon in federal tax and 33.55 cents in average state taxes and fees as of January 2026.

A route through higher-tax states can erase a small discount. Timing and driving habits also shift the total. A GasBuddy year-long price analysis, reported by Nexstar station KCAU 9, found Sunday was the cheapest fill-up day in 41 states, while Monday was cheapest in Alaska, Delaware, Indiana and Ohio.

FuelEconomy.gov, from the U.S. Department of Energy and EPA, notes aggressive driving lowers mileage by about 15 to 30 percent on highways and 10 to 40 percent in stop-and-go traffic. A summer road-trip survey reported by The Traveler put typical price-shopping savings at about 20 to 40 dollars per trip, money families could use for lodging or attractions.

Drive steadily, keep tires aired, and combine short errands at your destination.
