Do Local Bakeries Offer Freebies on Small Business Saturday?

See which bakeries gave cocoa, cookies and cake raffles and how to check your town's list before you go.
Yes, some local bakeries offer free items on Small Business Saturday, while others offer discounts or raffle entries instead. Small Business Saturday is an annual late-November shopping day that encourages customers to spend at independent retailers, restaurants and service businesses. Past bakery examples include hot cocoa, cookies and chances to win food prizes, usually tied to a purchase or visit window.
That means a free treat is possible, but it is rarely available with no conditions.

What bakery offers have looked like
For its Nov. 29 event, the Silver City MainStreet Project listed Breadbox Bakery at 211 N Texas offering 10% off plus entry to win a free 8-inch custom cake with a $4 minimum purchase, according to its 2025 event page. The same local list offered entry to win 2 sandwich meals including a cookie at Diane's Bakery & Deli, valid through 12/31/26.
For Small Business Saturday 2023, the Downtown Metuchen Alliance listed Awesome Yo Bakery giving free hot cocoa with any purchase from 12-4pm and Cinnaholic giving a free cookie with a $20-plus purchase, according to its 2023 event page. Those two cases show the range: one direct drink or cookie with a purchase, and one raffle entry for a larger prize.
Why many treats require a purchase
Most of the documented bakery items were not no-strings handouts. They required any purchase, a $4 or $20-plus spend, a 12-4pm visit, or entry into a drawing. A drawing gives a chance to win food, which is different from receiving food at the counter.
Silver City MainStreet Project also notes that shoppers must mention Small Business Saturday to receive discounts. If you do not ask, the register may charge the regular price.
How big is Small Business Saturday
Small Business Saturday was created by American Express in 2010 and was held Nov. 29 in 2025, generating over $220 billion for independent businesses since inception, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration in its holiday shopping notice.
The agency has co-sponsored the day since 2011, calling it vital for 36 million U.S. small businesses. American Express says it founded Small Business Saturday and Shop Small to reward shopping at small businesses, with rewards varying by card and terms.
Card rewards are separate from bakery counter offers, so check both before you plan spending.
