Do Gift Card Giveaway Prizes Expire?

Learn which giveaway gift cards can expire, how prize cards differ from purchased cards, and what dates to check.
Yes, gift card giveaway prizes can expire. In the United States, promotional prize cards do not automatically receive the same five-year protection as purchased gift cards. The deadline may apply to the card, its balance, or both.
Before entering or redeeming, check the giveaway rules and every date printed on the card or digital notice.

Why giveaway cards follow different rules
Federal regulations classify cards awarded through sweepstakes or contests as "loyalty, award, or promotional gift cards." This category may carry sponsor-set expiration dates, unlike ordinary gift cards bought by consumers. A qualifying promotional card must say on its front that it was issued for loyalty, award, or promotional purposes. It must also disclose when the underlying funds expire, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's Regulation E.
The five-year rule may not protect your prize
Purchased gift certificates, store gift cards, and general-use prepaid cards generally receive federal expiration protection. Their underlying funds must remain valid for at least five years after issuance or the last reload under 15 U.S.C. ยง1693l-1.
That rule does not automatically cover a qualifying promotional card received as a giveaway prize. Do not assume that a familiar retailer's name or a Visa-, Mastercard-, or American Express-style format makes the prize balance valid for five years.
Card expiration and balance expiration can differ
A "valid thru" date may refer only to the physical card's usable life. In some programs, the card stops working while the remaining balance continues to exist. For example, the American Express Reward Card agreement says the promotional card cannot be used after its valid-through date, but the funds do not expire.
A cardholder can contact the company for a refund of the remaining balance. This example does not establish the policy for other issuers.
What to check when you receive a prize
Start with the giveaway's official rules and prize notice. Then compare those terms with the information on the front and back of the card, its packaging, and any delivery email. Check these details promptly: Federal rules require promotional prize cards to identify applicable fees and provide a toll-free number.
If the issuer maintains a website for fee information, that address must also appear in the disclosures.
- The deadline for claiming the prize
- The deadline for activating or registering the card
- The card's "expires" or "valid thru" date
- The underlying-funds expiration date
- Any maintenance, inactivity, replacement, or service fees
When another rule may give you more time
State law can provide more protection than federal law. The CFPB advises that state protections may matter when a prepaid card displays an expiration date, so the result can depend on the applicable state and the type of card involved in your specific situation. If a card has expired with money remaining, call the number on the card before discarding it.
Ask whether only the plastic expired, whether the balance remains available, and whether the issuer can replace the card or refund the remaining value.
