How New York Aired Free
New York lit its Rockefeller Center tree on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2025, during a live NBC special from 8-10 p.m. ET, also simulcast on Peacock.
According to NBC Insider, the special was called Christmas in Rockefeller Center how to see the 2025 tree in person. That setup helped distant viewers. Local viewers could attend the area viewing without paying for the broadcast.
Out-of-town viewers could watch the lighting at the same time at home.
Why Washington Needed a Lottery
In-person attendance at the National Christmas Tree lighting used free tickets awarded only through an online lottery. According to the National Park Foundation press release, entries ran from Oct. 29 at 10 a.m.
ET to Nov. 5, 2025, limited to one entry per household lottery announcement for the 2025 ceremony. That meant no walk-up entry for the ceremony itself.
A household that missed the short entry window lost that in-person option. A household that entered could not improve its odds with extra entries.
Where Boston and Chicago Stayed Walk-Up
Boston held its 84th Annual Boston Common Tree Lighting on Dec. 4, 2025, from 6-8 p.m., with lighting at about 7:55 p.m. According to the City of Boston, the free event stood beside 139 Tremont St.
and aired live on WCVB Channel 5 Boston event notice for December 4. Chicago held its 112th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Nov. 21, 2025, at 6 p.m.
in Millennium Park near Michigan Ave. and Washington St. According to the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, the ceremony needed no tickets and the tree stayed on display through Jan.

What Free Still Requires From You
Free did not mean open-ended. Each city set time, place and access limits. A broadcast reached more people, but only at its aired hour.
Check the city or park source for the current year before you travel or invite others.
- Check whether tickets use a lottery, and note entry dates and household limits.
- Check start time, lighting time, street location and display end date.
- Check broadcast channel and streaming dates before you plan around TV access.
