Christmas Flight Deals: When to Book for the Best Price

Book late October to mid-November, fly Christmas Eve, and pick connecting flights to lower holiday fares.

For Christmas flights, book about 56 days before departure, in late October to mid-November for late-December trips. Google's five-year data puts the low-price range at 33 to 67 days out. "Days out" means days counted back from departure.

That timing matters because holiday fares are running high. Hopper averaged domestic Christmas round-trips at $452, up 23% from 2025. Hopper advises booking before Halloween because prices then rise fast.

The Christmas booking window

Google reports the lowest average Christmas fare at 56 days out, within a 33-67 day span, according to Google's 2026 holiday travel analysis. CheapAir separately puts the domestic prime span at 21-74 days, with the lowest average at 42 days. Both point to the same action period for December travel.

Expedia's outlook advises booking Christmas by October 31, with historical savings near $60 domestic and $150 international. For a December 25 trip, November 4 is about 51 days out. That is still inside Google's low-price range, but near its end.

Why travel days matter more than booking days

Google found that choosing travel days beats choosing a booking day. A Monday departure with a Tuesday or Wednesday return saved about 14% versus weekend travel. Connecting flights averaged 20% less than nonstops.

By contrast, the gap between the lowest-priced and highest-priced booking weekday was only about 1.4%. Shifting the trip by one or two days can therefore matter more than waiting for a particular weekday to buy.

Which dates tend to cost less?

Hopper finds Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are the lower-fare days over Christmas, with fewer crowds, according to Hopper's Christmas and New Year outlook. Hopper lists New Year's Eve and New Year's Day the same way for New Year. It counted over 40 million scheduled seats from December 22 to January 2.

Expedia's analysis named December 24 as the lowest-fare winter-holiday departure and December 31 as the lowest-fare return, as described in Expedia's cheapest winter-holiday days report. Earlier Expedia data showed December 19 about 25% lower than December 22. Flying on the holiday itself is less convenient, but the fare pattern is consistent.

How should international flyers plan?

International Christmas trips usually need earlier booking by destination. CheapAir cites about 70 days for Mexico and about 160 days for Europe. It also notes December is the priciest month to fly internationally.

That leaves less room to wait than domestic trips allow. Travelers going abroad for late December should compare current fares against those regional lead times now. Europe trips already sit past the cited average booking point.
