Can You Watch Downloads After a Streaming Free Trial Ends?

Learn why trial downloads on Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ stop working, and the one way to keep a movie after you cancel.
Usually not. On Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+, downloads are tied to an active account, so they stop playing when a free trial or subscription ends. A download is not a copy you own.
It is a temporary, licensed version of the title that the app stores on your device. Each service sets its own rules for how long it stays playable, and ending the membership cuts that access off.

What Happens to Downloads on Each Major Service
Amazon puts it most plainly. According to the Amazon Prime Video Usage Rules, once a Prime or Prime Video membership or promotional trial ends or is cancelled, you can't watch anything that came with the subscription. That includes titles you downloaded while the trial was active.
Netflix works the same way. The Netflix Help Center page on downloading titles says downloaded titles are deleted from your device if you cancel, and you have to stay signed in to watch them offline. Disney+ follows the pattern too.
The Disney+ Help Center's download troubleshooting page says you lose your downloads if you cancel or switch to a plan that doesn't include downloads.
Why Offline Mode Won't Keep Them Playing
Some viewers hope that staying offline will stop the app from noticing the trial has ended. The services build in check-ins and expiration dates to prevent that. Even on a brand-new download, these limits run out quickly.
Offline viewing lets you watch on a plane, but it won't stretch a trial.
- **Disney+:** Downloads must reconnect to the internet at least once every 30 days to stay playable, so they can't last long offline.
- **Prime Video:** You usually get 30 days to start a downloaded video and 48 hours to finish it after you press play. The window can vary by title and license.
- **Netflix:** Downloads expire after a set time. Some titles can only be downloaded a limited number of times per year.
Do Downloads Come Back if You Resubscribe?
Not on Netflix. Its Help Center says your old downloads don't come back if you rejoin after cancelling, so you have to download them again. Rejoining also doesn't promise the same catalog.
Netflix notes that titles that have left the service can't be renewed or downloaded again. A show you saved during a trial may be gone by the time you return.
How to Keep a Title After Your Trial Ends
To keep watching after a trial, you have to rent or buy the title. On Prime Video, movies and shows you rented or bought are not part of the subscription. They stay available after your membership ends.
Rentals still have limits. A Prime Video rental expires on its own schedule, whether or not you have a membership. Buying is the only option here that lasts beyond a set window.
Planning a Free Trial Around Downloads
If you start a trial mainly to binge offline, finish watching before the trial ends. Assume every download stops working the day access ends.
- Note the trial end date as soon as you sign up.
- Download only what you can realistically finish in that window.
- On Prime Video, remember the 48-hour limit once you press play.
- If you cancel early to avoid a charge, expect your downloads to disappear right away.
- Check whether a title is included with the subscription or is a separate rental or purchase before counting on keeping it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I cancel a free trial early and keep watching my downloads until the trial date?
Don't count on it. Netflix and Disney+ both say you lose downloads when you cancel, so plan to finish watching before you cancel.
Does switching to a cheaper plan affect my downloads?
It can. Disney+ says downloads are lost if you switch to a plan that doesn't include downloads.
If I bought a movie on Prime Video during my trial, do I lose it?
No. Prime Video titles you bought are separate from the subscription and stay available after your membership ends.
