Learn when gift cards work for free trials, when a backup card is required, and how to prevent an unwanted renewal charge.

Sometimes, but it depends on the service. A gift card alone may not qualify as the payment method required to start a free trial. Some companies exclude gift cards from trial offers.

Others accept gift-card funds for subscriptions but still require a credit or debit card before activating the trial.

How Spotify and Amazon Handle Gift Cards

Spotify gift cards cannot be applied to trial offers. That means a Spotify gift card alone cannot start a Premium trial, according to Spotify's gift-card policy. Amazon takes a different approach.

U.S. customers can use Amazon.com Gift Card balance for eligible Prime and Prime Video subscriptions, but Amazon requires a backup credit or debit card for an eligible free trial. Customers paying only with gift cards cannot receive the trial, according to Amazon's payment guidance.

Paying for a Subscription Is Not the Same as Starting a Trial

A service may accept gift-card funds after enrollment without treating them as valid trial security. Trial providers often want another payment method available for future recurring charges. Apple, for example, allows redeemed Apple Gift Card balance to pay for subscriptions such as Apple Music, Apple Arcade, and Apple TV.

However, Apple says some purchases require a credit card on file, and some subscriptions may not charge the gift-card balance. The practical distinction is whether the service accepts the balance for regular billing and whether it accepts that payment setup for trial activation. Check both conditions before buying a gift card specifically for a trial.

What to Check Before Signing Up

Review the trial's payment and eligibility terms on the provider's own signup page. Having enough gift-card balance does not override a requirement for a credit or debit card. Before continuing, confirm: Do not assume that entering a gift card prevents another saved payment method from being charged.

Read the checkout screen to see which payment source will be used after the trial.

Avoiding an Unexpected Renewal Charge

Many free trials become paid subscriptions unless the customer cancels. The Federal Trade Commission calls these "negative option" arrangements and advises consumers to review automatic-charge terms and understand the cancellation process before enrolling in its guidance on free trials and auto-renewals. Save the confirmation email, note the renewal date, and set a reminder several days beforehand.

If you do not want the paid subscription, follow the provider's cancellation instructions before the stated deadline.
