Can Two People in One Household Claim the Same Grocery Freebie?

See which grocery rewards Safeway, Kroger and Target cap per household, which go to each person, and the risk of opening extra accounts.
Usually not, when the offer is limited "per household." At Safeway and Kroger, the free item or digital coupon is capped at one claim per home, so a second person at the same address won't get a second one. Target Circle works differently, because its membership is tied to each person rather than to the home. A "grocery freebie" here means a no-cost item, birthday treat, sign-up bonus or digital coupon from a store's loyalty program.
Whether you and a partner, roommate or adult child can each claim one comes down to a single phrase in the terms: per household or per guest.

How Safeway Treats a Shared Home
Safeway's rules are among the strictest for households. Safeway's for U program details limit the free monthly item to one per household per month. The birthday treat is also one per household per calendar month, so two people with birthdays in the same month still get only one.
Sign-up bonuses follow the same rule. Safeway allows one welcome offer per household, so a second person who joins at the same address doesn't get a second new-member bonus. Linking accounts doesn't create extra deals either.
According to the Safeway for U FAQ, people in one household can link their accounts. Linked accounts share their points and see the same offers. That helps you earn rewards faster, but it doesn't double what you can claim.
How Kroger Limits Digital Coupons
Kroger uses the same household approach for most digital coupons. Its Digital Coupon FAQ says most offers can be loaded only once per household. Most can be used once per account, though some promotions allow up to five uses in a single transaction.
That five-use exception is the one to watch. It lets one shopper buy several of the same item at the coupon price in one trip. It does not let a second person in the home load the same coupon again.
The limit also goes deeper than store policy. Kroger Precision Marketing's digital coupon guidelines, written for the brands that issue coupons, say coupons can be downloaded and redeemed one time per household. The cap is part of how the program is set up.
Where Each Adult Can Have Their Own Account
Target Circle is the main exception among these three stores. Target's Circle membership help article allows one membership per guest, for personal, family and household use. Two adults at the same address can each have their own membership.
Separate memberships stay separate, though. Target's terms say Circle Bonuses are valid only for the member who received them and can't be shared, copied or transferred. Rewards also can't be combined or moved between accounts.
In practice, each of you uses your own offers on your own account. One person can't collect a partner's bonus and add it to theirs.
What Happens if You Try to Double Up
Opening a second account at a per-household store to claim an offer again breaks the rules. Safeway's for U terms forbid using more than one account to get around offer limits. Safeway says it may close accounts used that way.
That puts more than one freebie at risk. A closed account can take stored points and future personalized offers with it, which usually costs more than the extra item was worth.
A Quick Check Before You Both Sign Up
Before a second person in your home joins a program, check these points in the store's current terms: If the terms say "per household," plan on one claim for your home and use linked accounts to build points together. If they say "per guest," each adult can join, but each person's offers stay on their own account.
- **Limit wording:** Does it say "per household," "per account," "per member," or "per guest"?
- **Household definition:** How does the store decide who counts as one household, such as by address, phone number or linked accounts?
- **Account linking:** Does linking share points, offers, or both?
- **Transfers:** Can rewards be combined or moved between accounts?
- **Multi-use coupons:** Is a "use up to five times" coupon limited to one transaction?
Frequently Asked Questions
If my roommate and I have different birthdays, can we both get Safeway's birthday treat?
Safeway limits the birthday treat to one per household per calendar month. Birthdays in different months fall into different calendar months, but two birthdays in the same month still get one treat between them.
Can I use a Kroger coupon several times if I buy multiple items?
Some Kroger promotions allow up to five uses in a single transaction. Most digital coupons are limited to one use per account, so check the coupon's details before you shop.
Can my spouse and I combine our Target Circle rewards?
No. Target's terms say rewards can't be combined or moved between accounts, and Circle Bonuses can be used only by the member who received them.
