Learn when an Amazon gift card covers tax and shipping, what happens if the balance falls short, and where limits apply.

Yes. An Amazon.com Gift Card balance can pay for applicable sales tax and shipping charges included in an eligible Amazon order's total. The balance must be large enough to cover the full checkout amount.

If it falls short, Amazon applies the available credit first, and another accepted payment method covers the remainder.

What the gift card balance can cover

Amazon defines an eligible order total as the product price after discounts, plus applicable sales tax and shipping-related charges. Amazon's *Amazon Dash Terms of Use* also explains that eligible account credits apply before any remaining balance is charged to another payment method. Amazon's payment terms That means a gift card can contribute toward the item, tax, and shipping in the same eligible Amazon checkout.

You do not need a separate payment method just for the tax or delivery charge when the gift card covers the entire total.

The balance must cover the complete total

The key limit is the available balance. For example, if an order totals $42 after tax and shipping, a $50 gift card balance can cover it. A $30 balance cannot cover the full order by itself.

When the total exceeds the balance, Amazon applies the gift-card credit first. You then need another accepted payment method for the remaining amount, such as the unpaid portion of the item price, tax, or shipping.

When this answer does not apply

Amazon.com Gift Cards are limited to eligible goods and services on Amazon.com and certain related sites. They do not work as a universal payment method for every Amazon-branded checkout. Amazon Pay explains these gift-card limits In particular, an Amazon.com Gift Card cannot pay for an order placed through Amazon Pay on a third-party merchant's website.

Using your Amazon account at that checkout does not turn the gift card into a payment method for that outside merchant.

Why sales tax may still appear

A gift card does not remove sales tax from an order. Amazon may charge tax when the buyer does not have a valid exemption for the shipping state, has an expired or inapplicable certificate, or has opted out of Amazon's tax-exemption program. Amazon's tax explanation Before placing the order, check the final checkout total rather than relying only on the item price.

The amount shown there should include the charges your gift-card balance must cover.

What to do if tax was charged incorrectly

If you believe Amazon charged tax even though you qualified for an exemption, Amazon says you may request a tax refund after successful delivery. Contact Customer Service and provide the order number and any required exemption documentation. Amazon's tax-refund instructions A tax refund request is separate from paying the order with a gift card.

The gift card can fund the checkout total first, but any later refund depends on Amazon's review of the order and exemption information.
