Black Friday Vs Pre-Black Friday Sales: Which Is Cheaper?

Learn when to buy early and when waiting for Black Friday saves more on TVs, apparel and appliances.

Black Friday is cheaper on average than pre-Black Friday sales. U.S. online discounts rise through November and peak during Cyber Week, which includes Black Friday.

Pre-Black Friday sales mean October and early-November offers that ask shoppers to buy before the main event. Adobe forecasts discounts move from 14% off list in early November to 30% during Cyber Week, according to Adobe's September holiday forecast.

How average discounts change in November

Adobe expects U.S. online discounts to reach 21% just before Thanksgiving, then jump to 30% for Cyber Week. That pattern makes the holiday week cheaper on average than early November.

The same pattern appeared last year. Adobe found peak 2025 discounts hit 30.9% for electronics and 29.6% for toys, with the deepest single-day cuts clustered in Cyber Week rather than early November.

Which categories reward waiting?

Adobe expects Black Friday 2026 to carry the season's largest discounts for TVs, apparel and appliances. Shoppers for those three categories gain most by waiting for Black Friday itself. The 2025 results support that advice.

Adobe reported peak discounts of 25.1% for apparel and 24.3% for TVs during Cyber Week, according to Adobe's January recap of the 2025 season.

When can early prices win?

Averages do not decide every price tag. Visualping tracked daily prices on more than 1,500 U.S. products from early October through Cyber Monday 2025 and classed about one-third of Black Friday deals as no real saving, averaging 37% above the autumn low, according to Visualping's 2025 fake-deals report.

A UK price check found a similar limit. Which? tracked 175 home, tech and health products for a year and found 83% were the same price or cheaper outside the four-week Black Friday period, with none cheapest on Black Friday itself, according to Which?'s November analysis.

The gap can be large for one shopper. Which? found a Samsung Jet Bot vacuum sold by John Lewis for £350 on Black Friday after selling for £299 for 29 days in May-June 2024.

How should you shop both sales?

Treat early sales as a search step, not a deadline. Adobe measures U.S. online transactions, Which?

covers 175 UK products, and Visualping covers about two autumn months, so their results do not prove every item gets cheaper later. Use that limit to plan each purchase:

  • Check price history before buying early, especially for electronics and toys.
  • Reserve TVs, apparel and appliances for Black Friday when possible.
  • Buy early only when the current price already beats the autumn low and stock looks limited.
