Black Friday Turkey Deals: Are They Still Worth It After Thanksgiving?

Compare post-Thanksgiving turkey prices, freezer limits, and storage rules to decide if a second bird saves money.
Yes, a marked-down frozen turkey after Thanksgiving can pay off with freezer space and a cook date. It is a poor buy without space, a plan, or room after leftovers. Black Friday turkey deals here mean discounted frozen whole birds sold around the day after Thanksgiving.
In 2025, retail features were unusually low even as farm-level supply tightened, so storage and timing mattered more than sticker price.

Why 2025 shelf prices looked low
The American Farm Bureau Federation put a 2025 classic dinner for 10 at $55.18, or about $5.52 per person, down 5% from 2024. Lower frozen-turkey prices drove most of the savings for household shoppers, according to the Farm Bureau dinner cost report. Iowa Farm Bureau reporting on that 40th annual survey listed a 16-pound frozen turkey at $21.50, or $1.34 per pound.
That was down 16.3% from $25.67 in 2024 and its smallest share of meal cost since 2000. USDA retail-feature data from over 24,000 stores, summarized by Southern Ag Today and Texas A&M AgriLife, showed $0.93 per pound for birds under 16 pounds. Birds over 16 pounds averaged $0.92, compared with $1.19 and $1.15 last year.
Why the clearance table can empty fast
Southern Ag Today noted wholesale spot prices in early November were up 82% for 8- to 16-pound birds. Prices for 16- to 24-pound birds were up 88%. Most chains had contracted supplies earlier at lower prices, so shelf specials did not track wholesale.
Total 2025 turkey production ran about 3% below 2024, with fewer birds in cold storage. Avian-influenza outbreaks in the prior six weeks hit Canada and northern states including Michigan before holiday demand.
How long will leftovers and a frozen bird last?
Thanksgiving leftovers must go into the refrigerator within two hours. They stay safe 3-4 days in a refrigerator at 40°F or below. They hold eating quality 2-6 months frozen, according to the USDA leftover storage guidance.
That gives shoppers until about Monday to eat or freeze them. An uncooked whole frozen turkey held at 0°F or below stays safe indefinitely. It should be cooked within one year for quality, according to the FSIS turkey roasting guidance.
A deeply discounted bird is worth it only with freezer space and a planned use.
Should you buy another bird?
In 2025, Aldi sold a 21-item bundle with a 14-pound turkey and ingredients for nine sides. It fed 10 for $40, about $7 less than in 2024. The bundle ran Oct.
15 through Dec. 24, 2025, which stretched value past Black Friday, as described in the Grocery Dive bundle report. A second bird works as planned cooking, not as extra storage.
Match the purchase to space, timing, and actual meals. Buy only if each line is true: Measure freezer space before you shop and note the use date on the bag. Pass on the deal if the bird will not fit flat.
- Freezer holds 0°F or below with space for the bird flat
- You have a cook date within months
- Fridge leftovers are already eaten or frozen
- Shelf price per pound is below your store's usual price
