Black Friday Return Policies: What Changes During the Holidays

Learn which holiday gifts get January returns, which keep short limits, and what to save for a smooth exchange.

Black Friday return policies give holiday gifts more time for returns. Most large chains move December deadlines to mid- or late January for qualifying purchases. A holiday return window is a temporary extension of the store's normal policy.

It usually covers items bought in October through December and sets one January end date.

How January deadlines work

Best Buy explains in its 2026 holiday calendar that purchases from Oct. 30-Dec. 31, 2026 can return through Jan.

15, 2027. My Best Buy Plus and Total members have through Jan. 31, 2027.

Activatable phones, gift cards and marketplace items can still follow shorter rules. Walmart notes in its Marketplace Learn returns guide that most store and online purchases from Oct. 1-Dec.

31 can return until Jan. 31. Wireless phones, protection plans, major appliances and luxury items are excluded.

Shoppers should check the receipt for the exact end date. Save the receipt, order email and original box. A gift receipt helps when the buyer and recipient live apart.

Why Target extends only some items

Target states on its Help page that its holiday change affects only short-window goods. Electronics, entertainment, Apple and Beats products and most Target Plus items bought Nov. 1-Dec.

24, 2026 get an extended window. Other items keep the normal 90-day rule. That split matters for mixed carts with clothes, home goods and tech.

For example, a sweater may follow the usual timeline while headphones bought the same day get a holiday adjustment. Check the category before you assume extra time.

What should you check before giving a gift?

Ask about activation, installation and personalization at checkout. Those steps can shorten or remove return rights even during the holidays.

  • Keep the gift receipt and packing slip with the box
  • Leave phones, wearables and software unactivated until the decision is final
  • Confirm whether a marketplace seller sets its own return terms
  • Note if decorations, opened media or personal-care items are final sale

What decides whether a return is accepted?

The FTC explains in consumer advice on returns and refunds that no federal law requires stores to accept change-of-mind returns. Policies vary by store and commonly end after 30 or 90 days. The posted receipt, packaging or website controls.

Read those terms before Black Friday, then photograph them for January.
