Best Time to Activate Rotating Credit Card Categories This Winter

Activate before you shop to earn 5% back on winter groceries, dining, restaurants, entertainment and utilities.
The best time to activate is before you make your first bonus-category purchase this quarter. Waiting until after holiday shopping reduces what counts toward the higher rate. Rotating categories are quarterly bonus groups that pay extra cash back only after you activate.
The right move depends on which card you hold and where you plan to spend.

What counts this winter quarter
Chase said via Business Wire that Freedom and Freedom Flex cardmembers earn 5% cash back at grocery stores, on dining, and on American Red Cross donations for purchases Oct. 1 through Dec. 31, 2026, after activating at ChaseBonus.com, as described in the Chase Q4 categories announcement.
Activation is required. Only purchases in those listed groups fall under the higher rate. Discover says on its Q4 activation page that it Cash Back cardmembers earn 5% Cashback Bonus at restaurants, entertainment, and utilities from Oct.
1 through Dec. 31, 2026, when they activate, as described on the Discover Q4 activation page. This is a separate program from Chase.
Use the card whose groups match your spending.
Why activation date matters for Discover
Discover says on its Q4 activation page that it pays the Q4 5% only from Oct. 1 or the later activation date through Dec. 31, so cardmembers who activate late miss bonus rewards on prior purchases, as explained on the Discover Q4 activation page.
The start date follows you, not the calendar alone. That makes early action valuable during holiday season. An October restaurant bill does not earn the higher rate if you wait until November to activate.
What should you do on Nov. 2
The quarter is already underway. If you have not activated, activate before your next grocery trip, restaurant visit, utility payment, or donation.
- Check which rotating card you carry
- Complete activation for that card before you pay
- Keep using that card only for its listed winter groups
How to match spending to the right card
Use Freedom or Freedom Flex for supermarket runs, dining out, takeout, and American Red Cross donations. Use it Cash Back for restaurant meals, shows, event tickets, and utility bills. Check the category at checkout before you tap or swipe.
A grocery purchase will not earn the Discover winter rate, and a utility payment will not earn the Chase winter rate.
