Best Credit Cards for Free Checked Bags This Winter

Compare companion bag coverage across six airline cards and avoid winter baggage fees at check-in.

For winter travel, six airline-card options can waive checked-bag fees on major U.S. carriers. They are Delta Gold, United Explorer, American Executive, Alaska/Hawaiian Ascent, JetBlue Plus, and Southwest Rapid Rewards cards.

A checked bag means luggage you hand to the airline to carry in the cargo hold. Companion coverage, payment rules, and flight rules differ by card. Check the terms for your airline before you pack for a winter trip.

How many travelers are covered?

Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express gives the cardmember a first checked bag free worldwide on Delta flights. It also gives a second bag free on domestic Delta flights, as American Express states on its Delta Gold card page. The benefit extends to up to eight companions on the same reservation when the SkyMiles number is attached.

Citi's AAdvantage Executive World Elite gives first checked bag free on domestic American itineraries. It covers the member plus up to eight companions on the same reservation. Any Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards Card gives the member plus up to eight passengers a first bag free.

United Explorer covers the primary member plus one companion on the same reservation. Barclays' JetBlue Plus covers the primary member plus up to three companions. Atmos Rewards Ascent covers the holder plus up to six guests.

Do you need to pay with the card?

United Explorer gives the primary member plus one companion a first standard checked bag free on United-operated flights. Chase values that saving at up to $50 each way per person on its United Explorer page. The reservation must include the MileagePlus number and the ticket must be bought from United with the card.

That purchase rule is waived only for flights within 90 days of account opening. By contrast, Delta does not require ticket purchase on the card when the SkyMiles number is attached. Atmos Rewards Ascent requires the Alaska or Hawaiian flight to be paid with the card.

That Ascent payment covers the holder plus up to six guests, with preferred boarding, as Bank of America explains on its Ascent card page. JetBlue Plus also requires tickets bought with the card for the member plus up to three companions.

Which flights count?

Delta coverage applies worldwide for the first bag and domestically for the second bag. American Executive coverage applies on domestic American itineraries. United coverage applies on United-operated flights.

JetBlue Plus coverage applies on JetBlue-operated flights and carries a $99 annual fee. Southwest cardmember coverage gives a first bag free for the member plus up to eight passengers. For other travelers, Southwest lists $45 first-bag and $55 second-bag fees for Basic and Choice fares effective April 9, 2026.

Southwest describes cardmember terms on its cardmember benefits page.

What to check before you pack?

Winter reservations often include companions, connections, and fare choices. Match your card, reservation, and flight type before you arrive at the airport. Add your loyalty number and qualifying payment before check-in for a winter flight.

A missed number or different payment method can mean paying the standard bag fee at the counter.

  • Same reservation: companions must share your reservation, with limits from one to eight depending on card.
  • Loyalty number: add your SkyMiles or MileagePlus number where required.
  • Payment: use the required card to buy the ticket when your card requires it.
  • Flight scope: confirm domestic, operated-flight, and fare limits for your route.
