Where did students get backpacks and supplies?
World Overcomers Christian Church hosted its Community Back-to-School Supply Giveaway Aug. 15, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at 2933 S. Miami Blvd.
in Durham. It listed free student supplies, teacher closet kits, food, music and free haircuts. World Overcomers Christian Church gives the time and address in the church event listing.
Durham County Library held Tools for School Aug. 1, 2026, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., in the Main Children's Programming Room at Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St.

Who qualified for Backpacks for Kids?
Triangle Nonprofit and Volunteer Leadership Center's Backpacks for Kids equipped low-income Durham County students in grades K-12. It also supplied teachers at Durham County Title I schools, meaning schools with high low-income enrollment that receive federal aid. Sponsors signed up by July 31, with sorting and distribution around Aug.
10. Families could not walk up for this program like a public giveaway. Supplies flowed through sponsored packs to schools and teachers.
For 2026, the July 31 and Aug. 10 dates have passed, so late seekers need a different option.
How do kindergartners get 10 free books?
Book Harvest and Durham Public Schools expanded Books for K districtwide in October 2026. Every kindergartner in all 32 Durham Public Schools elementary schools can choose 10 brand-new books to keep. Book Harvest describes the districtwide expansion in the Book Harvest press release.
Choice happens through school, not a public pickup line. The benefit covers enrolled kindergartners only, not other grades. Parents should watch classroom messages for choice day and missed-day pickup.
What after-school care runs through June 2027?
Durham Parks and Recreation dates traditional-calendar after-school care Aug. 24, 2026-June 8, 2027, and year-round care July 20, 2026-June 8, 2027. It serves ages 5-12 weekdays 2:30-6 p.m.
with a snack. Durham Parks and Recreation lists dates, ages and hours on the after-school program page. Registration opened May 1, 2026, and space varies by site.
The program is supervised care with a snack, not a supply giveaway.

- Confirm age 5-12 eligibility and 2:30-6 p.m. pickup plan.
- Ask the site about fees, seats and snack rules before you count on care.
