The updated list includes Visionary Youth's August 2 event, Oasis Barbershop's annual day and the Food Bank of Lincoln's school-year food support. Families with school-age children could receive haircuts, backpacks with supplies and weekend food at no cost.

Each program set its own date, place and eligibility rules.

August 2 haircuts and backpacks

Visionary Youth lists its 14th Annual Back to School event for Sunday, August 2, 2026. Listed hours were 9am to 3pm at College of Hair Design, 304 S. 11th St.

in Lincoln. The group used morning, midday and all-day shifts for setup, surveys, runners, lines and youth activities, as described by Visionary Youth on its 2026 event volunteer page. Families received haircuts and backpacks through same-day handoff.

No drawing picked a few winners from entries.

Oasis annual day for kids

Oasis Barbershop states it holds an annual back-to-school day with free haircuts and backpacks for all kids. The shop describes live music, bouncy houses, fire trucks and guest barbers supporting families, as stated by Oasis Barbershop on its Community page. Children take part in person with family.

The benefit is free at the gathering, not a mailed prize.

Who gets school-year weekend food?

The Food Bank of Lincoln runs a BackPack Program, which sends food-filled backpacks home on Fridays during the school year. It began in 2004-05 at Clinton Elementary with 50 children. It now reaches about 2,100-2,300 children and families each school year, according to the Food Bank of Lincoln on its Youth and Family page.

Weekend food is limited to students who qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch. That limit makes it needs-based school-year support rather than an open prize, as explained by the Food Bank of Lincoln on its BackPack 20th Anniversary page.

How to plan for lines and limits?

August events move families through stations during set hours. Line staff and activity leaders show them as large, same-day gatherings. Confirm BackPack enrollment through the school office for the current term.

Expect Friday take-home during the school year.

  • Check date, hours and address before leaving
  • Arrive early for same-day haircuts and backpacks
  • Ask the school about Free or Reduced Lunch rules for weekend food
