Which Hialeah events gave backpacks in 2026
The City of Hialeah held its annual Back to School Bash on Friday, July 31 at Milander Park starting at 5:00 p.m. The program gave backpacks and school supplies and also offered raffles and giveaways, according to the City of Hialeah Back to School Bash page. What families received at each site
The Milander Park bash combined direct backpack and supply handouts with raffle prizes. Raffle prizes meant a chance to win, separate from the backpacks set aside for students. Miami Dade College describes its Hialeah Campus Hialeah Cares drive-thru as providing free food, toiletries, books and backpacks to participants at 1780 W.
49th St., according to the Miami Dade College events calendar. The Aug. 15 listing paired weekend food support with school-supply pickup for families.
What rules limited backpack pickup
Hialeah giveaways were first-come, first-served while supplies lasted. Children had to be present to receive a backpack at participating events. An Eventbrite ticket or online RSVP did not reserve a backpack or hold a place in line.
Families who arrived after supplies ran out missed that day's distribution even with a ticket.
How the tax holiday covered remaining supplies
Florida's 2026 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday ran July 20 through Aug. 20, 2026. It exempted qualifying clothing and bags priced at $100 or less, supplies at $50 or less, learning aids at $30 or less, and computers and accessories at $1,500 or less, according to the Florida Department of Revenue Back-to-School page.
That window overlapped all three Hialeah backpack events and ended after the Aug. 13 first day of school reported by the M-DCPS news release. Families could pick up a free backpack first, then buy leftover pencils, paper, clothes, or a laptop without the state sales tax.
