Amtrak Discounts for Thanksgiving Travelers: What to Know
Save on Thanksgiving Amtrak trips with group fares, child discounts and early booking tips.
Amtrak travelers can lower Thanksgiving costs with group Share Fares, child fares, and discounts for seniors, military members and students. Savings depend on route, fare type and holiday blackouts, so check eligibility and book early for this busy week. Share Fares covers groups of three to eight people traveling together on one reservation.
Thanksgiving is Amtrak's busiest travel season, and Amtrak said in its Business Wire announcement that it handled more than 1.2 million trips in 2025, up nearly 6% from 2024, with record demand expected in 2026.

How do Share Fares work for groups?
Amtrak Media reports that groups of three to eight people on the same reservation can save 17% to 60%, with larger groups saving more, in Amtrak's Share Fares announcement. Everyone must travel together on one reservation. The range applies to the group fare, not to separate bookings.
This option helps families and friends who can coordinate one booking. A group of three sees a smaller percentage off than a group of seven or eight.
- 3 to 8 riders on the same reservation
- Travel together on the same itinerary
- Larger groups receive the higher percentage off
What do families pay for kids?
Amtrak notes that children ages 2 to 12 travel for 50% off the adult fare when accompanied by at least one adult age 18 or older on the same reservation, with no promo code needed, on Amtrak's children discounts page. The adult books the child on the same reservation. This can matter for Thanksgiving reunions with young children.
Check ages at travel time and keep all tickets together.
Which senior, military and student savings apply?
Amtrak Media reported in October 2023 that senior, military and similar passenger discounts now apply to all fares, including sales. That change makes holiday-week tickets more likely to keep a discount, where the fare type allows it. NC By Train, Amtrak's North Carolina partner, lists separate everyday savings on most fares: 15% for college students, plus 10% for veterans and 10% for active-duty military, spouses and dependents, on the NC By Train everyday discounts page.
Those rates apply to eligible riders on participating North Carolina routes. Carry student, veteran or military ID as specified at booking or boarding.
What Thanksgiving limits should you check?
Some California discounts pause for Thanksgiving. Pacific Surfliner notes that California Everyday Discounts face holiday blackouts, including senior-discount blackout dates of Nov. 24-25 and Nov.
28-30, 2026, on the Pacific Surfliner senior discount page. Travelers on those dates pay the available fare without that senior reduction. Blackouts vary by discount and route.
Read the fare rules before choosing travel days, especially for Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday around Thanksgiving.
How should you book for Thanksgiving week?
Amtrak urges early booking because holiday trains and connecting seats fill fast. Search Thanksgiving dates now, compare fare types, and lock tickets once plans are firm. Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority said in October 2026 that Capitol Corridor runs a weekend and holiday schedule on Thanksgiving Day and the day after.
It advises booking online in advance because connecting buses require reservations and sell out fast.
