Amazon Gift Card Prize Not Working: Code and Account Checks

Check the marketplace, account, checkout, and prize source before reporting a rejected or empty Amazon gift card.

If an Amazon gift card prize code is not working, first check the Amazon country site, account, and checkout location. Then verify the prize source and preserve the code, card, and receipt before seeking help. Here, a prize code means the redemption code supplied as a promotional reward.

A failed redemption may indicate the wrong marketplace, an unsupported checkout, or a card whose value was taken after activation.

Confirm who awarded the prize

Do not assume Amazon sponsored the promotion simply because the prize is an Amazon gift card. Amazon's brand-use requirements for third-party incentives state that Amazon is not the sponsor of those promotions. Review the original winner notice and promotion rules.

Identify the actual sponsor, the Amazon marketplace named for redemption, and any instructions supplied with the prize. If the notice lacks enough information to identify the promotion, pause before sharing the code or personal details. Contact the named sponsor through contact information independently found in its published rules or website.

Check the marketplace and account

Make sure you are using the Amazon country site specified for the gift card. Marketplace restrictions matter: Amazon says an Amazon.co.uk gift card cannot be redeemed on Amazon.com or most other Amazon country sites in its Amazon.co.uk gift-card terms. Use this short checklist: Do not repeatedly test the code across unrelated accounts or country sites.

The sponsor's rules or prize notice should establish where the reward belongs.

  • Confirm the country or marketplace shown in the prize notice.
  • Sign in to the account where you intend to keep the balance.
  • Re-enter the code carefully, checking similar-looking letters and numbers.
  • Save the error message or take a screenshot before trying another route.

Check where you are trying to spend it

Redeeming a code and spending an existing balance are different steps. A balance may be present even when a particular checkout does not accept it. Amazon Pay says an Amazon.com gift-card balance cannot be used through Amazon Pay on third-party merchant sites.

It is limited to eligible goods and services on Amazon.com and certain related sites, according to Amazon Pay's gift-card guidance. Check the balance inside the matching Amazon account, then try an eligible purchase on the appropriate Amazon marketplace. If the balance appears but the payment option does not, the checkout location may be the problem rather than the code.

Protect a card that is empty or rejected

A newly purchased physical card can be empty because someone obtained its number and PIN before purchase, then drained its value after activation. The FTC describes this form of tampering in its December 2024 gift-card warning. Keep the physical card, packaging, store receipt, prize notice, and any screenshots.

These records identify the card and document how you received it. Report the problem promptly to the prize sponsor or purchaser. If someone bought the card at a store, the purchaser should also contact the issuer and retailer with the card and receipt; prompt reporting may improve the chance of recovery.

Never pay to release the prize

Do not buy another gift card or surrender a code to cover supposed taxes, processing, verification, shipping, or release fees. A demand for gift-card payment before receiving winnings is a major warning sign. Never give the claim code or PIN to a caller, texter, or email sender who says they must verify the account or prize.

Those details can allow someone to take the card's value without possessing the physical card. For a suspected Amazon gift-card scheme, keep the card and receipt, contact Amazon at 1-888-280-4331, and report the incident to the FTC.
