Airport Lounge Access: Free Ways to Get In This Winter

Check card passes, companion rules, and USO eligibility before heading to the airport this winter.

Yes, you can enter some lounges without paying per visit this winter. Lounge access means entry to a separate seating area with Wi-Fi and snacks. The main no-extra-charge routes are selected card benefits, passes earned through a card, and military service centers.

These routes still have rules. Most require enrollment, a same-day flight, or space in the lounge. Check your eligibility before you count on a quiet seat.

Which card benefits include entry?

Chase links Sapphire Reserve to Priority Pass Select and Sapphire Lounge by The Club entry. It covers 1,300+ lounges in 600+ cities for the primary member and up to two companions after one-time enrollment, as described on the Chase Sapphire Reserve benefits page. You must hold the card and complete enrollment first.

American Express lists 1,550+ Global Lounge Collection locations for Platinum cardmembers. That network includes Centurion Lounges, Plaza Premium lounges, and Priority Pass lounges after enrollment. Delta Sky Club entry applies when flying Delta same-day, as described in the American Express Platinum lounge guide.

Companion and flight rules vary by lounge type.

Can a pass cover one trip?

United Explorer cardmembers receive two United Club one-time passes after account opening and each anniversary. Each pass admits one person when flying United or eligible partners, subject to club capacity rules, as described on the United Explorer card page. The pass does not add companion entry.

This option fits a traveler with one or two United flights per year. Save the passes for a long layover or a winter delay. Once both passes are used, wait for the next anniversary for more.

Are there lounges for military travelers?

USO Airport Centers offer lounge-style retreats with Wi-Fi, snacks, seating, and family areas at no cost. They serve active-duty, Reserve and National Guard members, military families, retirees with valid DoD ID, and Gold Star and Families of the Fallen, as described on the USO centers page. Access depends on eligible status and valid ID.

These centers are in major U.S. airports. Hours and space vary by location and travel volume.

Bring your DoD ID and check the center location before your travel day.

What should you confirm before you go?

Enrollment, flight, party size, and space decide whether you get in. Many lounges admit entry only with a same-day boarding pass and turn people away when full. A card in your wallet does not help if enrollment is still pending.

  • Confirm enrollment is complete for Priority Pass Select or other lounge programs.
  • Count companions against the stated limit, such as primary member plus up to two.
  • Match your ticket to the rule, such as United or eligible-partner travel for a United Club pass.
  • Carry the ID or card named in the terms, such as a DoD ID for USO centers.
